well then..who needs labels anyway? if your sound is good enough pay the mastering yourself..upload it on digital downloadshops and send the promos to the festival organizers..
that way you dont have to share the money with a label and still get your bookings and sells(maybe)..
or is it just prestige..if i ever turn to a label, i would suggest that the label takes care of most bookings and promotion..
then, after a few major gigs one could think about releasing a physical cd...imho..
especially as a newcomer one would need to generate kinda fanbase who would like to have your sound in good quality..
or one should generate that thrue free downloads in the first place..might be a smart way..
what do you think about?

I think on the long run it will be like this or it is maybe even so in fact - without connection there is never anything & this goes for sure for every (music) scene.
Music will be free sooner than later. It is only a matter of time.
Espescially in this scene tbh there is no big sense to hope for myricals.
Look on the thousands of releases and billions of labels and many aspects more. Each one can be a label in a day so to say.
Music business will never be the same as it once was.
Without connections there is nothing, while with connections you can sound like nothing special and get known in a nutshell on the other hand.
It is for sure fun to have lots of this invisible releases but I don't think that this is sth very magical nowadays.
I have the same opinion as you Zork.I would just prefer a vinyl first since not everybody has an own and it has its charme. But a physical cd in brilliant quality must be sth special too.
Peace

hmmmm I always thought labels do mastering on tracks before they put em in a compilation. Nice info though (Y)

the few labelmanagers that i know, i would not describe as clerks. they are people who know that you dont make real money with running a label. its people who do it for the love of the music. the fun to select a new artist, release a first cd and get the guy going to get gigs. compared to the other job they have its loosing money (if expressed in the bucks they make per hour). as a by-product they might get some gigs themselves if they dj (which the guys that i know do). i think these people are somehow essential for this scene. every artist has to start somewhere. its really a pitty that sales went down so drastically. i hear that a now, for example a new talented dark psy-artist, might sell 250 copies of his first cd. this makes the whole idea of releasing some kind of non-sense, looked at it from an economic point of view. maybe if you dont have any possibility to make any cash in life it looks like they make big bucks, but with the skills it takes to really run a label well, if they would use these skills in any other company they would make more money. so some respect for people who run a psy-label should be there imo.

Managing a label properly is a lot of work; below is list of things to keep in mind:
-relationships with artists, contracts, payments
-music selection
-mastering
-CD printing / art work
-physical distribution (deal, contract, payments)
-digital distribution (many different shops, or Ingrooves)
-accounting (must be done right)
-advertising / promotion (effectivity vs cost)
-taxes
-can you do all the above and earn enough to pay all involved and costs as well as another release?
Not everyone is cut out to do business -many people in psy scene do deals on the back of a napkin and conveniently forget the terms if becomes inconvenient after the fact -must be crystal clear on agreement from the start.

Most labelowner (if not all) within our genre, have other jobs on the side. They tend to earn a bit more than the artistst per release, but nothing worth mentioning. Mostly they earn money by DJ'ing and often they make music them selves so Live performing is also a possibility.
In fact the only way to earn any money for us all is by performing at festivals and parties...

by staying small and niche. by controlling quality, pushing creativity in both art and music and by staying faithful to loyal fans and supporting DJs |
