Hi, i dont know if this is the right place to open this discussion, but as here is a producers forum, i think i m in the right place.
How a psytrance label survive? I mean, if an artist, that is the guy that actualy make the tunes, cannot survive only with the profits of sales of their cds, how a label, can survive? Is it a non-profit organization? hehe
besisdes that what it takes to open a record?

I can't answer this entirely, but label managers go on tours and collect djing fees as well, so they don't only rely on cd sales.
Other label managers have other jobs than just running their label as well. I know Niki, the manager of Mighty Quinn, does. http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

You don't need a bunch of equipment to run a label. The manager is the one who just picks the music, some do more, but it's not all of them.
DJ fees are what they are paid when they play a show.

You can open a label from your home, you need nothing other than some basic graphics (maybe you can make it yourself), a myspace page, know some willing artists that will contribute and be ready to pay for mastering fees (and maybe cd printing if you wish to have your music printed), that's all.
No process needed. If you have an idea for a label just go for it, contact the artists you wish to release and see if they are interested in your idea/essence of a label and your releases.
As long as you have an idea why you need to open another label and what will set you apart from others than the rest is easy
Good luck ))

Who produce the cds? I mean if the first pack of cds of an album will be 2.000 copies, who will produce them? the label right?

Jobs of a label:
Select music
Buy music from artists
Organize for a CD to get artwork, mastering and print (not doing it, just organizing for it to be done, only if artist does want to)
Sell CD to distributors (distributors get it into the stores worldwide)
promote the CD so that everybody knows about it.
Keep the money for the CD-Sales or part of it. depends of the kind of contract.
Sell tracks to other labels for compilations, depending the contract.
Some labels also:
Promote their artists to party organisations
Organize flights, travels for the artists
Keep 10% of the artists liveact fee.
Equipment needed:
Computer, Phone, Internet Connection, Brain, Nerves, Extra pack Nerves, Coffee
Basically a label manager is a clerk. no more.
Labels, in the classical sense do not need a studio and a proper mastering has to be done by a proper mastering engineer with proper equipment which is by far out of the budget of a psytrance label. If a mastering engineer wants to become a label manager, ok, but a label manager can't really be a good mastering engineer just beside doing all the other jobs. sure he can do masterings as we all can, but never on the level of a pro. and pro quality is what a label should organize for its artists.

have good artist - and forget the digital worlds after a release, means pay for a vinyl edition with a big cover.. for a few months. If the money came (atleast) back ,release your music on CD.Nobody of the brilliant artist have tried that in this scene.
I miss the big Spirit Zone or Dragonfly labels.
I wish the Twisted Label would do so because I do not think that labels will survive without any change .
IF the big names would do so,there were lots of collectors of originals again.
And the thousands of mycels arising from mother earth each month would have only the noize hehe
The more the decent stuff won't go even before releasing to a torrent, the more there will be guys who will pay for an original new release with big psycedelic cover for the walls and the tons of anyways free noize will be more stopped to be so appriciated.
I think that could make really sense in reality.

My label survives by givin good bookings to the artist that they "own".
Thàey get a certain % of that fee.
They also organise parties and get money from that.
With the profit they release albums and compilations of there artist, so then they get more bookings....
Every artist has his own studio offcourse, and pays for the gear himself... |

yes in fact I also don't think really that labels gonna survive looking on all this internet development. It is more a function like promotion nowadays and the money comes only from life shows.Musicians that have lots of life acts have a good way.
Of course I wish to people that work for it only all the best. And I also don't think that the oldskool vinyl is a solution ,it is more an idea sometimes maybe.
peace
