I don't know how much is too much... i like them to still have meat but not to fuck my bassline. I don't have optimal monitoring solution right now so any help is good. Thnx.

I find using voxengo SPAN helps quite a bit in seeing low end conflict. I know u shouldnt trust it 100% and to still use your ears but i dont have the most accurate monitors either. This helps me. Your leads should be able to occupy down to about 150hz - 200hz and with a bit of fine tweaking u shouldnt interfere with bass and still hav a meaty lead.

All such things I decide each time by ear. Not sure there is a specific freq for that cut. Maybe around 100 Hz.

it depends on the lead really... some you can cut quite a lot without changing the sound / impact in the mix... others you need to go gently and maybe use combination of hp and low shelf... for most i cut at about 200 hz... experiment see what works for you.. remember to listen to the lead in the mix rather than on its own           http://www.catawampus-records.co.uk/Catawampus_Records/Skyhighatrist.html

if they don't contain any lows, there's no need to HP them (you can't eq/filter what's not there).

if they do contain lows, then use a HP and adjust the cutoff until it sounds right to you, in the context of the track.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Filters are often a bit of a blunt tool to use on their own... if, when clearing out the bottom end of your leads for your kick and bass, you're used to using HP only, try putting in a low shelf as well. This will let you use the HP solely to remove any low-end clutter and maybe control the fundamental frequency of the lead a little if necessary, and then use the shelf to control the actual weight of the low end of the lead to fit in the mix.

[E] I see the Skyhighatrist got there before me!

+1000

if the bassline is good enough is very rare that the lead actually still it's focus from the low end, but still i cut around 90 hz.           http://www.youtube.com/user/ChichkeMultiTech

there is really no formula for frequency as it depend a lot of the filter(s) type used on the synth and how it s tweaked , the mix...

+1 with colin i try not highpassing too high but using a other band if needed...some great analog desk have their hp set low that what inspied me to try this i think it can help to not thin too much the sound and get good meat in the mids

also agree with colin, a HP in collaboration with a nice low shelf can work wonders. carve out the subs and boost the bits that count (if you need to). i do this with the bax eq every day.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma
