very veyr hard for me to say because i work in cycles...
i could be for a whole week just sampling my gear and movies and such, then editing samples and making huge folders.
i could spend a few weeks just making modular patches in scope modular.
the actual arrange and mix of a track itself usually takes me 3-4 days, but that is because i already made myself a ton of unique samples, built nice mod patches i can instantly use and so on, the arrange just needs some inspiration and it almost takes care of itself.
so i donno really

lol.....I'm the same.
I already know how to mix from University and doing work for bands but the song writing bit is a tuff one for me. Producing your own music like Psy/Goa-trance I think is a big task.
Sound design
Song writing / Musicianship / programming
Mixing
Mastering (not always)
And of course you act as the producer as well
Sometimes I have thought of giving up. But I am getting better in some of these areas. I have found that listening to a wider range of music has helped keep my passion alive.
I admire your honesty. I think that shows you know where you are at. Knowing that I think can help you work out how to go forward.

Messing about is never a waste of time.. sometimes I'm in serious mode, sometimes I like to see what happens if I put 8 insert effects on a sample.. happy accidents! |

4 hours is the fastest I made a complete track in I think.
Usually it's something like three four hour sessions.
I used to somewhat disrespect people who did their tracks in a day or two, even if I actually liked their music. I just thought they should be able to do much better if they spent a week or two like I used to do.
But I don't see much correlation between time spent and quality, not for my own work nor for others.
If anything I find that I work faster when really inspired so many times the best tracks is the ones that was fast to make.

hmm pretty hard question...
the fastest I did was also like 4-5h, but I dont really like to do that...imo the track goes fast into a repetetive and kind of boring direction if you run thru it that quick!
but thats just my experience...right now I dont have that much time for producing, so I do like 2-4h each 2nd to 4th day but that time is with a lot of listening breaks, so I do my stuff and when I got some time I continue the track and so on...then I come on 2-4h producing time
a whole track takes me like 2-4weeks usually, but often I'm also working on several tracks at a time...
with getting out of the mood of the track I dont have any problem really...in contrary I get more ideas to put diversity in the track when I take some time for it!

i usually work for 4-8 hours on a track per day. depending on the track it usually takes atleast 10 days to finish it. usually i like to keep longer periods of "ripening time" between these working days. so the whole process takes 20-40 days. i've noticed that it usually gives the track a better form and direction if you distance yourself from it every once in a while and then listen to it again with fresh ears. at the moment i'm writing a track which i started autumn 2006
