Hi everyone, this is my first topic here... Well, i was just wandering how much time you spent producing one track, from 0 to 100% complete (not mastering).
Its because im working on my second track (melodic psytrance) and im taking too long in the process, and i wanted to know others experiences, ranging from the newbie like me, to the advanced producers.
I also want to know the genre of the music of course.

From ambient to trance.
From scratch to complete arrangement, 3-4 hours.
One day break, checking of structure and details(correcting/adding/changing), 2 hours.
One day break again, recheck if what previously done is ok. If no, another 2 hours for finalizing the arrangement and details. If yes, proceed to mixdown.
Mixdown can take from 3 to 10 hours, depending on the complexity of the track and the live recordings it may contain(vocals or other instruments).
Mixdown is split again in 2-3 hours mix sessions with one day intervals(at least).
So in total, it takes from 6 to 18 max actual working hours spread in a 2 to 12 days time period.
A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life. |

Usually from 3 weeks to 3 months, depends of the complexity.
You can make a linear track with just arps and leads and fx's (basic), i can make this in 3 days but if you want to really shape your sound and have an "objective" point of view, you must spend more than 3, 5, or either 10 days on it.

But mine is a different story, I am fuckin' useless!

i have to mention the best best tracks i did made in 2 days tops , straight 14 hours a day work , some food , one shower , 2 sex sessions ,lots lots of smoking , couple of more hours after the ear refresh from the sounds .. viola
i think once u sure what u do , why u do it , what u want to hear , then its pritty easy hey... the biggest time killer is to not be sure what u want , then u can mess a hole month with a track contain 7-8 presets www.sattelbattle.com

As long as it takes... usually way over 100 working hours.

I usually work on a track for a week straight. Leave it at 80% completion (just needs polish, freq balancing, additional fills etc.) then leave it for a month and come back to it.
Actual work time probably 2 solid weeks, but it is spread over a longer period so as to not go insane listening to the same bit of track over and over and losing sight. Plus I get new ideas when I come back to a song and it can progress in a different (better?) direction. I don't think I'll ever be 100% satisfied, but there comes a point when you just have to say 'it's done'.
This is a good follow on from the recent thread about how many tracks you've completed. I work really fast, but I'm obsessive and a perfectionist and I like to experiment as I go, I rarely have an idea of what the finished product will be like.
Those saying they can complete a track in a couple of days.. that means you could make an album a month if you tried! I think I could manage an album a year if I had consistently good ideas and saw them through to the end. |
