actually there is nothing wrong in using samples, be it only some or 100% if it's that what you like or what you want to do.
there are those sounds you want but can't make with a synthesizer, or can't make yourself easily.
but regarding creativity, originality and labour for the track i see some graduations of my 'respect' for the producer.
i mean it's totally ok to use a couple of samples to give the additional extra, or just because the kick/bass/stab you need is already made by someone.
but when it comes to mainly using full loops, synth-lines, kick, fx from sample packs or other tracks, then where's the point of producing? imo that's chosing the easy and fast way. it's like a washed and dyed rag rug. it's a carpet, alright, but just a rag rug, no persian. ;-)
it's not that i can't like or listen to sample-music ;-) - for most stuff i even can't differ - but when i know that the artist does all sounds/production/melody/mastering by himself, then my admiration is biggest.
atm i use no samples, as i have only set up my hardware and have no real sampler there. so except the wavetables in the my microwave XT and a couple of historical waves in my machinedrum i cannot use 'samples'. |

everybody using samples. some more and some less.
i believe that hh, snares, crashes, percussions, etc.., it's very hard to make from scretch. and it's not the point of producing to make them. the point is to know how to use them. but that's wasn't the question of that topic.
i think it's ok to use percussive loops, but not too much and not too noticable. 1 loop for more groove can be great sometimes |

That's production.

sorry man, cant agree with that. thats no way production cause you just dont produce anything, you just arrange and maybe....well customize. but no way to call this production guess what u mean is composing....
only use shots for my hatz, nothing else. and i dont think all are using samples one or the other way. i know few great artists doin each single sound on their own or got their sample/shot/loop lib made on their own.....synthesized. and things like snares/hatz etc are not that difficult imo, if you prefer the original sound of a 808 hat it´s just another story.....
cheers

Plenty of people do it. I personally don't like using samples for things outside percussion, but if it's there, it's there for everyone to use. I don't see a point to using premade sounds for other stuff that is supposed to be unique, but then again, what's the point of doing a remix (sure you can add your own sounds, but you get the point)?
For me, production is all about no rules and doing your own thing. As long as you're happy with it, that should be all that matters (also, like your sig says, fuck genres).

i think you all are kicking a dead horse here.. as long as the music is ok it really makes no difference what you used to get it done.
if you can make everything form scratch than good for you, if the other does the same thing by using a sample good for him... for me what counts is the resolt.

What if you've recorded live sessions with musicians, Does that mean you're not really producing?
Is the term producer an exclusive term for people who synthesize and create thier own material then?
I thought it was someone who produces a finished product. |

no stuff to feel offended for, never said that and just wasnt the theme, we´re talking about premade samples here.
anyways, same discussion like heaps of times before. do what though wilt shall be the whole of the law i dont care how you finish your stuff, and a discussion about it would fail the topic i guess.....
pitty it always gets this uncharming discussions about what is right and what is wrong. just told you my opinion, using (premade) samples has nothing to do with production, just get the terms and you will understand. two different things imo, get it or leave it and i never said it´s wrong or the word is exclusively for "producers", but feel free to think about whatever comes to your mind.....
