The solutions i can see are 3.

investing money and launching your own label is the right way to do it (in my opinion).
but there's also another way, kind of sell out, but if a producer's main goal is to make money: then he/she would make more money producing for other people. let me elaborate: friend of mine produces tracks for hiphop artists and for each track gets paid around $3,000 to $4,000 depends on the complexity and the amount of work and time involved. he made his living out of it, simply catering to other people's needs. not that he likes the music he makes, but that's his job.

yeah, I gave up on the making money part, or trying to make a living from it a while back.
best way is to provide for your own means, i.e. work a normal day job that could develop into an alternate career, WHILE making music on the side, and developing it as it goes along. (hey, musicians can't just STOP making music, otherwise you arent a musician anymore, or werent serious to begin with)
granted this will decrease the long days of working just on tracks, and the complete immersion factor, but at least you will still have a safety net, and have some cash
records should really be thought of more as a means of promotion, and gigging as the cash flow, when it comes to it. records work best as a cash flow item on an economy of scale...
in my own experience, I have found that IT fits in nicely with electronic music. you keep up on the newest technology, and the pay is not bad, too
making music should be done for fun, anyway. Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

Just as a point of comparision, but when I was taking music business classes several years back, the average artist on a major label in the mainstream music world was lucky to make 10 cents US on a CD sale. The standard first offer contract from the label was more like for 5 cents per disc.

I totally agree that djs who earn money out of their playing have to buy the music. Earning money out of stolen stuff is bad karma.
I had one conversation some time ago. Talking with a guy about cds i said "sometimes i remember my cds just for the colors". He answered very proud "all my cds are silver". And were not talking about safety backups. Same guy told me minutes later about his producing and new label plans. Very stupid eh?
Same people later complain that the business is running so badly and no money comes back. |
