I was reading online in psynews.org an interview with Shiva Chandra (one of my prefered).
http://www.psynews.org/intervws/shivacha.htm
in the end this asked him as below:
13) One last question that could interest our visitors : from an album costing 20$, how much come in your pocket ? And how much do you get when there is one Track from you on a 20$ compilation ?
It depends on your contracts. For one album about US $ 1,50 including copyright payments. On compilation for example ten artists have to share this US $ 1,50.
less than 1.5 Dollar/Euro,it is not so cheap?
Can somebody tell us about his experience with Labels ? informations of contracts ?
What do you think about it ?
peace. |

YouŽll never make your living from releasing albums....the contract varies from label to label, or even artist to artist,
some give you money for each cd sold, some give you an agreed amount upfront and thats it, some do a bit of both,
but regardless of how they pay, you know that it wonŽt be a LOT of money...labels also donŽt get nothing similar to 20e per cd...they give their albums to distributors and distributers sell to shops (again not even near to 20E i believe) and the shops sell to people for 20E (and let me tell you, you have been shopping in an extremelly expensive shop...20e...) ..But in the end I believe that who will make the most money (in %) out of a cd is the shop selling it, after the distribution, after the label, and after all that the artist (yeah the person who actually wrote the track...lol) is who gets the smaller slice....So basically, the ones that work the least (shop selling at 20e!) are the ones who get the most money from it in %, and the ones who actually made it (artists) are the ones who get the least....
pls anyone correct me if im wrong, i might be (i hope i am lol)

Artitst often dont get more than the advance they are paid, which ranges from 150- 1000 euros for one track. We paid an artist 200 euros for a track. I think Earthling asks 1000 for a track... so it depends... people negotiate...
Regarding sharing; the standard quality on hubs on DC++ and other P2P networks is 192kbs. While this may be great for home listening, its is NOT for DJ-ing on PA.
There has been much discussion on whether p2P sharing is good for a small scene like this, the postive being that more people hear trance than ever before, negative is that people might download instead of buying.
I personally am against sharing psytrance, there is too much copying and not enough money returning to the artists. Clubs that pay a DJ 200+ euros for a 3 hour DJ set should check the CD case to see that they are origonal CD's... all to often they are not... at least some of them should be origonals ... in an ideal world ... but what to do..

@ cytopia: it is a good idea, but checking could be a problem because djs often make safety-copies of bought cds |

@ Wavelogix, I care to buy the cd's. Might be that i'm just a moron, but you have to if you want to play the tracks at parties and if you have some heart for the scene. Freeloading will get you nowhere. IMO it's okay to download the tracks to preview them, but i think that if you really like a track that you should buy it (especially if you play it for other people). Besides, after a few years of playing mp3's i found out that i still played tracks from cd's i had bought years before, but that i didn't do that with copies of MP3's. It's time to practice what we preach: let's support the scene and act like we think a step furthur.

i agree with the said, it is a scene need, the shares.
i don't play and don't plan to do it, even if i did, i guess my aquisitions would be out of date to be played.. i buy cds 1st for the matter of tracks quality and the amazing work on some cd cases and the artists support... later in time, the fact of knowing i posess classic rarities ;P |

True, that could be an excuse, but most DJ's who make backup copies like i used to still stick the origonal insert with track names and bpm behind the copied CD... (since it takes more time to copy the names of the tracks than it does to copy the CD these days)
Ultimately lots of DJ's copy unreleased music, and its fine, I used to exchange music with friends but we all bought at least 10 CD's per month or so each, so it was quite innocent. The amount of people I see with ALL copied CD's.. they have ALL the music... its sick... but i dont think they realise... its just too tempting for most I suppose, but as Boobytrip said yo support the scene we are a part of is important... if you like a track... go buy it, not like its THAT expensive anyway...

i think many people download just for the convenience factor. the way forward for psytrance is to set up digital stores like beatport and start cashing in on digital only files. |

Well have in mind genarally that this 1/1,5e per cd is about all genres of electronic music.
I am signed to an italian label for 3 years and already have released one cd.
Our contract says about 1e per cd.
The company guy gave us 1500e on sign for the first release, and started to getting the money from our sales (1e/cd).
Hopefully we sold more than 1500,i dont know what it could happen if we didnt sell this amount...i dont like to pay when i give my shelf u know..
He didnt spend money for our promotion exept some promo copies to radios and magz, all promo i suspect was done for free.
He also dindnt care about our live performances and stuff as any other non top company.
I guessed that our music was the point.
He didnt like it so much to invest more.
To be honest i liked only 4 of the 10 tracks.
Well here come the problem..
We have 5 year contract for 3 cds.
The release was two years ago.
All this time i am investing time and money for producing a better product for him to sell.Even if we sell the double, lets say 3000 copies i ll get only the 1/10 of what i deserve.
So fuckin what?
He will get 45.000e and 40000 in his pocket and he is gonna lol with me.
The solutions i can see are 3.
1.I continue making music/mixing for fun loosing time and money having the faith of an Mtv hit,
2.I invest more money and make my own label
3.I quit my music ambitions.

Thank you everybody for your answers and explanation, and I thank ana3imandros for his information about his experience !
as I understand, is there is a war of Labels, and there is no good prices for Producers :s
anyway it' s good to continue making music for fun in good quality, and let's see what the futur bring !!!
By the way, What about Releasing the same album in multiple Labels (in different countries for exemple) ?? is that possible ??
peace. |

nah... most labels send their stuff to international record-shops, so you would get the same cd in the shop from different labels and i don't think a label would release something onto a market that has already had the chance to buy it from another label. Labels have trouble to get to break-even when they are the only one releasing an album, let alone when others also release it.
