Hello... i dont know if this is the right section to post this topic, but, if you want to sell your sounds (not tracks... i mean like your basses, kicks, etc etc) what price can be considerably fair for the producer who create the sounds and the purchaser as a new incoming producer...

You make your own price
Ask yourself: Are your sounds good? Do they sound professional?
Are you going to sell sounds on kit, as a 'ready to make' track'?
Is it an advanced sample pack? Or is it a beginners "not so professional" one?
Beware that the incoming producers might starting making money with tracks that include your samples!
Then... if you don't charge a fair price, you're going to feel bad... because they're ahead and they sound exactly like you! |

Most of my material is available free for download somewhere on the webs.
I have yet to see a cent from my material, and that's okay. I've gotten a lot of travel from it, and met all kinds of great people and had great experience, and for me that is more than a blessing for what I do, and I'm thankful.
I see my music as more of (to quote mubali) a calling card, saying, "hey, if you like these sounds, why don't you ask me to play at your event?"
When putting together my "sunday morning cartoons" compilation, it was amazing to see how many solicitations I got from artists for me to buy their tunes.. 300 euros, 500 euros, etc.
Ridiculous!
Given the fact that well established labels are lucky to sell 200 copies of an album and most listeners pirate the music they listen to, these sorts of requests seem wholly unreasonable.
Who has 5000 euros to waste on putting together a CD when the world will just get it for free anyway?
In a perfect world, the artists deserve what people would pay for their tracks and we all could just make music and perform at shows full time. However, this isn't a perfect world, and given the sad, yet obvious facts of the scene, it makes me wonder how artists can ask for these sorts of prices... and if people actually pay for them? It also makes me question their drive and their ulterior motives for being involved in this music.

So if you were making a compilation and you wanted to include, Dado, Tristan, Kox Box, or some "big" name of the stuff you are into of the same caliber, you'd say its ridiculous if they asked for 500 euros?

I'd expect something like that from those artists. Especially if I was the one that approached them.
I wouldn't expect those artists to be soliciting me to buy 500 euro tracks without me having contacted them prior to, however.
That's what I was getting at.... key word being "soliciting".
However in your example, one would have to assume that the compilation maker has approximately 5000 euro surplus he's willing to blow on a killer compilation that will inevitably be pirated within a matter of hours or days and he/she will inevitably lose money on, a sum which most people don't have lying around. If that's what the person wants to do then great, but that's an interesting reason why tracks from artists who charge those prices are seldom seen nowadays, perhaps... most people simply can't afford it.

I feel like an idiot... I just re-read the original post. Sorry for misleading the thread.
Hmmm, perhaps a suggestion for starting out would be to set up a website on subscription sign-up basis and offer free sample pack downloads to members who subscribe. Generate information and feedback from this to help you decide how much your sounds might be worth and how much people might be willing to pay.

Ive looked into this before since I enjoy programming synths alot more than making music and I honestly couldn't see how its worth the time.
Rob Pappen only charges 30 bucks for his patch banks and he is well known..
It won't be worth the money you make as far as wasting your time setting up a website. |

I'd disagree, to an extent... the market for sample banks is a lot greater than just the psy community, and while there is also extensive piracy in the sample world as well, it might be a not-so-bad idea to try it out, as long as you only rely on it as a bit of supplementary income on your hobby. Over time, at the very least, you could put it towards website costs or whatever, which you could use for other things if you wished.

Unless you're an established developer or artist I doubt anyone will buy your sample packs. There are a lot of free sample packs out there as it is so I wouldn't count on making much or any money from this just yet.
If you want prices, just look at what other sample packs cost. Maybe you could sell more by offering them for cheaper. Then again, anyone actually buying a sample pack is going to want the highest quality. http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

If I were you, I would give production classes!!
It's way better than selling samples.
You can charge 25 up to 50 dollars per hour! According to the level, beginner or advanced.
This way you teach people how to achieve their own sounds.
