I just wanted to make my 100 post.
as for the post, use your ears. if you cant afford that then use a good spectrum plug-in.
the most important thing in a mix is balance and eq. turn the fx (reverb...) off and listen to the mix with just the bass and drums, and then start to add the other.

hi people
heres my motto:
kick = cut below 50hz
bass = cut below 50hz & reduce around 250hz to fit kick
synth = cut below 500hz
drum & percussion loops = cut below 500hz
hihat & cymbals = cut below 4000hz
psychedelic sounds (fx) = cut below 4000hz
this way your mix is split into distinct layers & your sounds wont interfere with each other...
not a rule... just a rule of thumb.

The bottom line for bottom frequencies is as such--if you do not know what they are doing, get rid of them. The second to bottom line is, don't lie to yourself about whether or not you know what they're doing.

you can also touch the cone of your speaker and if its going in and out like crazy to produce a not-so-powerful kick and bass then something is going wrong.

Most of the postings in this thread make no sense at all.Sorry.
If you talk about cutting you also have to talk about the cutting edge.For e.g using a 50 hz hipass filter with 6 db Cutting Edge will end up in a total different result as using 12,24,32 or 48 db cutting Edge.
Quantity and Quality a Universal Law.
Nice greetings

This is to much, i think u can go down to 250hz, depends on the sfx u want to make.

true, it depends on the fx you want. by sfx i meant the superclear little atmospheric sounds that sit on top of the track & make it sound trippy...
but as a rule i find that the more sounds you put in the same frequency range, the harder it is to get a clean sound.
in theory if your kick & bass sound warm & tight by themselves you don't need (or want) any other sounds coming into their frequency range, it will just fuck up your careful kick/bass work...
remember, its a guideline - not a rule thats written in stone
JUPITER: you are absolutely right. i was talking about a 24db cutting edge

personally, i just feel that it should be a combination of quality and personal feeling,
whatever sounds good to you, but should sound good on a PR system as well... you don't necessarily have to follow all the production rules...
still, psytrance is possibly the best produced music in the world, and i believe it is important to keep pushing the quality of the sound forward...
p.s. can somebody recommend a good VST filter
