It depends how to consider a trance fan.
People who listen psytrance here and there? Well then you got over 2 million IMO. If you consider them like in this forum, then I'll guess around 550,000

Well, I know the Brasilien scene a bit but 100.000 ? I would say 10.000 "lovers" might be closer.

so many trance lovers and you can only wonder why even the biggest sales only reach about 50,000 copies. i mean if sales were higher maybe more musicians could make a living on sales too as opposed to just making money on live acts.
hopefully this could bring down the prices on acts
as some really charge too much and end up not delivering their moneys worth either by not showing or showing up just playing cd´s.
you know who you are. but as it is now one can only make money on live sets unless ofcourse they sell unusually well(but who does? only a few)           Mastering available here:

Maybe there are 300.000 trance party people out there, but they don't buy any trance albums

Honestly..
Most people don't bother to buy too many albums.. And yes, I'm one of them.. I only buy the albums I really like, or actually love..
I wan't to support the artists.. so yes, I've bought for example the both Shpongle albums, Entheogenic's album, Hallucinogen in Dub, Violet Vision, and so on.. but if a compilation has like 1 track I like, there's just no way I buy it..

..just guessing but this might be the reason for low sales, and the sales aren't actually even so slow.. Imagine how many fans for example Eminem has.. tens of millions.. and I'm sure his records don't sell that much..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

IMHO I think that Trance takes all its sense when partying : there is the music of course, but there is the party ambiance, the people you meet there, the fluo deco, all these good vibes and smiles, and usually a fantastic place lost in Nature. Most of the people there rely on the DJ to spread "his" sound.
It is part of the "rave" system where the music is just an element (necessary but not the only one).
conclusion: there are much more party protagonists which love trance than Trance CD buyers.
The one which buy CDs are real trance addicts ,
perhaps those who don't go partying anymore (to stay in touch) and the those who want djing a little ( I think the well known DJs have free promotional copies of CDs).
Of course there is exceptions, but it could be an explanation.

....because you cannot choose which part is burnt.

I think that in Denmark there are maybe about 1000 - 2000 people, that take trance seriously and not just go to parties because of drucks or what ever, or have like one old goa cd at home... and in Denmark we have pretty good artists like beat bizzare, reefer decree, the cjurios on aka Tenga and krumular and so on... if a country with this little trance lovers have quite a lot of acts that shows that maybe we are over estimating how many trance lovers there really are... because i dont define a trance lover as person who goes parties takes a lot of drucks (no offence to the drucks ) and dosent know who Shiva chandra or infected mushroom are (come on)...           "Love is a way of life"

There is heaps of stuff that you can do in the studio that you can't do live .. for lack of better expression it is more real what is being accomplished in front of an audience, word of mouth creates a fan base and if you are pulling dodgy shows then it will get out there .. I have no problem paying for shows when I know that the artist is making more off me in 1 night than if I did buy a CD and if there is multiple shows then it is likely I will end up at going to them..

Besides the mainstream music world is full of fake artists who hide behind studio techniques .. Eminem was mentioned by traveller.. have you noticed on his records that his voice is double or triple tracked to give it the fatness that it does and when he is live he has 2 more guys to back him up?
Or take that Cher track with the line "Do you believe in life after love" or whatever .. the vocal effect was done by setting Auto Tune (which is a program to push sounds into tune) to the incorrect settings to use it as a FX.. if she could sing in the first place why did they need to turn the Auto Tune on which led them to this discovery?

Give me live trance anyday

Agree with PsychoPat that only trance addicts buy trance CD's .. here I estimate there is less than 5,000 trance addicts and about 80,000 trance party people..

( funny topic ) Is dificult to spit a exactly number or near real active trancers number when we have not a common definition about trance person. according my point of veiw. trance persons who love trance scene and respect then like a religion we can speak in something around 400.000 and.. growling up
