We had a disscusion about how many trance lovers are actually on this planet. If you consider that a trance CD sells about 3000 copies, then there shouldn't be that many.
Well we thought about 15 - 20.000 ?
Any ideas ? |

I would say around 300 000 - 600 0000 fans..
remember.. the 1st shpongle sold over 40 000 copies..

Yes but Shpongle sells to a large number outside the trance community !
If there would be 300.000 to 600.000 why are there only 3000 copies sold ?

Yes this is a nice question.How many are we?
Journey dont make comparisons by using the sales numbers,for example michael jackson sold lets say 20 million copies but everyone in the world knows him and almost every one of us owns 1 of his cd's or albums.
I guess psy trance people are something like 10.000.000 persons worldwidely,some of them listen the music more often than the others and some of them go to parties while other dont go but i think that this is the number.

Here in Brazil I think we are much less than 0,1%... But Brazil has more than 140.000.000 citizens... I was never that good in Math...

300 - 600 thousand is a lot of people - quite possible though..
when I started reading this thread I wondered whether you were talking about just trance (psy, ambient etc) or people who are a fan of trance but more into other genres or even party type .. as in they like trance but they prefer clubs (non-trance) to hang out in ..
Then I thought about Bryan Meadan's thesis (Trancenational Alienation) where he'd divided people into trancists and trancers, so are you counting the people who are totally into the music or into the parties where the music are played? ..
I'd offset the answer to all of it by some figure to compensate for all the people who do not have a voice to be heard (no net, minimal album purchases, intermittent party attendance) .. pluck out of the air whatever feels good and you may have a figure that satisfies the question

Around 50% of earth's population have seen atleast 1 James Bond movie..
It's pretty ridiculous to say that 5% of earths population would be trance fans..
China = 1.2 Billion.. have we ever heard about chinese trance scene?
India = 1 Billion.. Okay we have some Indian members here, but most people in Indian can't even afford a cd player.
Africa = 1.5? Billion.. once again.. not many africans have even cd players.. south africa not being included..
So that's Almost 4 Billion people.. and maybe around 100 000 fans..
Then let's go to north america.. The scene isn't huge there, but still.. I would give US & Canada maybe 100 000 fans..
Then South America..
I actually bet there's like atleast 100 000 fans in Brazil + Mexico + the others..
So then there's Europe..
Now.. I say maybe, hmm.. 250 000 fans?
so that would be 550 000 trance fans.. it might be a lot more.. it might be a lot less.. I don't know.. but that's something it could be.. IMHO
