yeah, absoletely.

but still you'll agree that 20+ (even 10+) minutes tracks are quite rare occasion.

anyways i didnt mean that the length somehow depends on psychedelia and vise versa. what i wanted to say is that 7-8 minutes are quite enough to tell the story and dont get bored. not too short and not very long. its just right to _me_.

sure we can remember "...and the day turned to night" that is a brilliant masterpiece and takes a half of the album or "the ancient sounds of the god" and they for sure just cant make make you stay bored.

its music and obviously it would be stupid to try to set rules on such things as length or bpm or i dont know.. my point was thats 7-8 mins is a very cool length for psytrance.

Excellent thread.

Something I do every year is the 'album in a month' challenge, http://www.rpmchallenge.com/.

Usually how I've ended up completing it is to have a bunch of tracks started, and work on whichever one appeals to my current mood. I usually don't end up with anything very epic, but it's been good practice.

Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life, craving for more.

My technique is to work faster (hell, I can make a track in 6-7 hours when I'm in the zone) and just say "fuck it, I'll do something else" when I get bored - then I just fit it to the track. It's actually good fun and adds a nice WTF?! factor to a track which makes it sound special.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

I feel pretty damn good about myself now, as I average out at about 5-6 mins before I run out of steam. But I think length is fairly, if not totally irrelevant to the quality of a track. As long as it flows nicely and has a well defined structure and goes everywhere it needs to in order to have a well defined purpose, it's all good!

One of these days though I need to save up a load of cash, quit my job and just make hours of music that just flow through... just for the hell of it. Sometimes I'm far too concious of time people are willing to take listening to a track and cut it off too soon.

Never ask advice from a friend who makes 2-3 minute pop/punk tracks though.

I always try to make music 6:28 long, because that's 2PI, and then my track is a circle.

Hahahahahah!!! Saf and Tomos, you guys are fuckin halarious, i was reading this pathetic excuse of a thread and wanted to comment on how there is no solid information that you can actually absorb in both pages, but you guys certainly captured my mood as soon as i neared the end of the thread....thank you for that cuz i was startin to doubt that this forum was actually useful after all!:)
thanks guys!!

P.S. you can capture the mood of psytrance in an 8 bar loop so i think thats long enough for a psytrance track...           saii.rave.ca

When I'm writing psy, I *only* write in 3 minute (128-bar) sections. I have a short attention span, and it seems like it would be easier to just move on to the next idea rather than trying to stretch the same idea out to 7 minutes. It's gonna be interesting once I get enough of them to actually start mixing them together into a set.

of course, I also write super fast, not-particularly-melodic stuff, so it kinda works to have it be like "3 minutes, off to the next one!"

Why not try this.

Start a project off with 32 bars of kick and percussion and 4 different 8 bar basslines that you'll use through-out your track.

Over those 32 bars start writing all the sounds you're going to use and see how well they'll sound mixed together.

Once that's done, just start arranging your project. Inevitably you'll most probably have written the busiest part of your track first, and from there can just write in and out of it.

o.k, many people here with the same 'problem'. why not leave the 7-8 min standard and just make music you like.
admit there are some great 8 min tracks. but most of them are boring if not mixed quite fast. in a live set i prefer changes every few minutes than endless repeats.

at the moment i record different ideas with the same instruments between 1 and 5 minutes. and then maybe stretch, combine, export and using in other projects, or making two different 'tracks'. whatever...

i think for more pop orientated music you should know before how long the track will be and how it's build up. but for freaky psychedelic music i guess hazard can be a good friend. so no need making 7 minutes songs imo. except you release on compilations...
