Fellow ISRATRANCERS.....
I need some guidance in some matters as im still away from my "new small studio" and lacking some knowledge....also i would like to mention that i`ve been reading the threads in this part of the forum (it has been helping me a lot - thank you so much for sharing). But some confusion has arise from these readings....
I`ve been playing/learning music since early ages and even "playing a bit" with Reason but now i quit my job and will lock myself at home for 6 months to try and improve my mastering of the production softwares....
Question1: Besides my PC, interface and midi controler/synth( no money for monitors now!!!), i was planning to focus on 4/5 VSTIs but found myself reading posts of people working with 20/30/40!!!! Feels like i will spend more time learning software than actually composing!!!!!! So how many VSTI (effects and synths) do you guys use/need?
Question2: Working with different VST synth will allow me to "create" a lead on one and "send" it to another and work on differnt parameters?
Sorry for the length but, though i have fairly good music knowledge, im having some doubts to establish a work/composing setup...my backgroung is on guitar/piano
Thank you so much for your guidance...
Also im starting with Cubase lessons...guess it will be an asset!!!!

Answer1 : Having many VSTis is always good IMO, although just a few of them will mostly be used. I like having a lot just in case they could provide me just one element that i need in the certain moment, even if i didn't use it for months.
For the VST FX it's quite the opposite in my case. After having installed and tried hundreds of them, now i'm shortening my list. I have uninstalled most of them and just use the best for specific tasks. Note that my main FX are provided by my UAD card.
Answer2 : I can't answer that because i didn't understand what you mean exactly.

If by pattern you mean for example a midi melody that you recorded with one synth, then yes, you can just assign another VSTi to that midi track and listen how it sounds through that.
The number of VSTis that you can have active at the same time is directly proportional to your computer's cpu power and ram amount installed.

I did but i was left a bit confused....my plan was to use the xiosynth (hardware)+ 1or 2 soft synth+ 1or2 bass&drum VSTI+ some effects.....at least for the next year!!!! I hope that with, lets say, 2 good plug-ins i can manage to have a good range of sound effects!!!!! I dont want to became this ultra software specialist - its not my cup of tea!!!!!
Many thanks to Alex&Bandarlog....still i would welcome more advise on this matter...its what im in need of!!!!

My suggestion is to don't waste time exploring presets of a lot of VSTi's but to be focused on one or two (Albino 3 and Vanguard).
Then you can use a lot of instances of them, and if you pc is too slow you can freeze the tracks (if your host can, of course).
My 0,5 cent.

1: I use up to 10 VSTis maximum 5-6 different synths (including hardware) in avarege. I used to have more... However one day I realised its not neccessary to have plenty of synths to make something new. One should learn synthesis, not new synths. In my projects I have about 20-25 instances of synths when I finish them. I guess one can make everything with 1 synth, if the synth is decent.
by question number 2 I guess Ellon ment if one can use a preset from one synth in another. the answer is no.
in cubase sx you can plug up to 64 vstis + 8 inserts chennels and 8 sends may be assigned to each. having a group channel tracks extend the possibility to put effects on each VSTi to infinite.

Many thanks for the advises....
@Makus
Im having Cubase/Ableton lessons and the person teaching also is going to go for a bit of synthesis....also i have reasonable general music knowledge which, maybe, is an advantage!!!!
regarding the presets....if i understood if i want to work with presets coming from 2 synth i have to use both of them? But the effects VSTI can be applied to any of the synth?
Once more many thanks for sharing your knowledge...

Its not how many you have, It's what you decide to do with them that counts.

well im our case i think as far as synths go we usually work with 3-4 of them all the time its like 1 from each synthesis method we understand and are capable of make new sounds.
for fx is again tha same thing exept that they are more cos of u cant have a good compressor and a good delay in the same unit so the qantity is bigger but the plugins remain the same in every track.
having many synths in general is fine for experimenting in new things but for making the music
is always going back to the ones u know best!

I advise you to try out all the VSTs you can find and than work with the ones you like the best. I, personnaly, have around 30 or 40 vsts, from which I use no more than 10 very frequently.

u have like 2 apart from the standard logic plugs
Massive and trilogy
Of you know how to use what you have you'll make alot more interesting music then when you just download loads of vsts and browse presets all night long
For fx i have some more, but i dont use it too much actually
Mostly i can get the same effect combining some fx from logic
