i make this trick. it helps on Logic Audio.. dont know how is on other sequencer. First i try to make own "Instruments" when i have to shoot samples. i mean its dull to use a compelete channel jsut for shooting some crazy samples right? so its better to organize your samples over the entire piano-roll using some good sampler, a lot of the modern samplers permits u to use separate effects and setting for every single sample, as kontakt.
second, a lot of the sequences i like i bounce! and i bounce them with everything they need so that later i can just import them back without any further eqing, limiting etc.
third, I BYPASS all the inactive effects and also instruments. I mean.. if i have a compete Reaktor loaded in my project, nad this reaktor is with some crazy cpu-sucking ensamble and for some reason i dont want to bounce.. well when the same dont sounds (inactive) i just bypass it (with the automation) so it liberates the CPU. I try to use all the posibilities of the MULTYINSTRUMENT VSTi, like cube, terra, chameleon, etc etc etc. also much of them have internal reverbs, delays, chorus and much more, so u dont need to apply externel effects on it, well boy make this simple calculation. if u have 3 multiinstruments on 3 diferent channles. supposing a CUBE, TERRA, ABSYNTH. every one of them permits u the use of 8 diferent channles!!! its already 24channels in 3!!!
fourth, use MIDI PROGRAM CHANGES! thus u can change dynamically the presets of your instrument along the track. U can say.. but i want my own presets!! yeahh. make them, save them. load them and.. VOILA!

its all about making tricks
ehehehehe

I tend to have more than 100 audio tracks and 14-20 busses in finished projects. Use however many tracks as you need.

No, i think that depends of a certain formula:

You start with the inches of your flat screen monitor, add the keys off midi controller (including the knobs and all sliders) multiply the usb and firewire ports present on your studio setup, then subtract the number of times you stop doing that particular super tune because something or someone distract you (to be accurate be honest with youselff), multily by the meters your monitors are away from each other (metric scale is very important) and finally add the number fo hours of sleep each day!!!.......there you are!!!
Works fine for me....
