I have probably 300? dunno... but I buy then rip. I've paid for pretty much all of it. I buy from Saikosounds, mainly because i can hear entire tracks of entire discs, and I don't mind rewarding ($$$) everyone in the path from creator to me.
I rip at the highest possible quality, file size is immaterial.
I haven't played a CD directly in years.

Same.
I sometimes take cds to the car though.

^^ probably because a chill out cd can be bought years later wihout losing it´s momentum, and trance cd´s have a shorter duration expectation

a little bit under 200 I reckon, a lot of it is shitty promos from the trancelucent spam era though
I buy a lot more nowadays with everything being available on beatport and not having to bother with greedy customs assholes down at the post...all of my CDs are ripped in FLAC along with cover artwork so I don't use em at all anymore

That is an interesting analogy

honestly i think it depends on whos releasing the cd, and the artists in there..
some cd´s maybe don´t rech the 2 weeks life expectation, while othrs may pass one year me thinks

In my personal taste, ambient & chillout lasts a long time because the genre is a lot smaller in regards to number of releases, and these releases are much more unique in that there is no set formula. Each album has a lot of personality and is individual.
i happily listen to ambient and chillout that is 10+ years old and it sounds fresh to me, whereas a lot of trance from last year just sound average to me.
Trance is very formulatic now-a-days and therefore people get bored easily. As well, the people most likely to buy CD's or vinyl are now DJ's only (and a few hardcore collectors), and to get gigs you must have the latest release if not unreleased tunes.
Therefore trance requires a higher turn over in releases and sales, and noone ones to hear that tune that smashed the dancefloor all of summer 2009, we want fresh tune like fresh orange juice!
I guess where I live I am luck in that both chillout/ambient * dark psy (style I mainly dj), are only played by a minor few dj's so playing older stuff is fine and i just stick to the 4-5 labels of trance I like anyway.
I think it is always difficult for a physical retail shop to meet the demands of the electronic music scene in general, hence why most stick to selling pop, rock and heavy metal.
I cannot name a single retail store I know of in Australia that stocks psy/goa trance but they have plenty of chillout/ambient/world
