How many of you produce with headphones?

Because I normally work on my tracks at night, and I live with my family, I don’t have the option of speaker monitors that will keep people awake so I’m producing (which incorporates all aspects of making and finalising a track) with a pair of flat-response, Sennheiser HD280 Pro headphones.

I’ve heard it’s not possible to mix with headphones from some people while others say it definitely is, especially with the headphone compensation plugins like HDPHX.

I’m working on a demo at the moment and if my production starts getting serious enough I’ll probably invest in higher quality gear which would include a better, external soundcard and a pair of monitors. In the context of a demo, which is meant to showcase the potential of the producer without any professional studio assistance, would using headphones to produce be ample? Would they even help train my ears more than a monitors?

How many of you producers use headphones for the main part of your production?

I think it's close to impossible to make great mixes on headphones. You are just to close to the sound so can hear lots of details wich will make you turn down lots of sounds that you want in the background, so on speakers you wont hear all the details that you could hear on you headphones.
Thats my experience however i do use headphones alot in combination with my monitors but thats because my room and monitors arent good enough at all to tell me whats going on. Especially in the low end.
You really need some relativly big monitors to hear whats going on down there but headphones can be used for this imo.

So a a pair of good headphones and some midfield monitors is a good combination imo.
Some really big monitors and a great room is better though.

It depends on what you mean by producing. I'm with AvS, to engineer the sound headphones are bad, but I use headphones a lot while making music. Especially for recording (I play the music on my headphones and record me playing the guitar or on the mic).

And if you don't have a good pair of monitors, then its best to play your song on the most type of sound systems you can, including you headphones.

If your sound system is really bad or non existent, or your headphones are REALLY good, then you should produce on your headphones (and buy a good pair os monitors ASAP)

I ususally bounce between my MUSICSON monitor-100 and my behringer HPS-3000 and I am trying to get a pair of Alesis M1 active MKII           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

why? they're an exagerated barking piece of shit, but you might like that sound, if your goin a bit deaf.
i'd rather use sennheiser headphones than alesis. save your money and get some proper speakers, or better 1s that cost less than alesis (and there is plenty of them as it ain't hard to beat the sound quality of alesis), i wouldn't even pay 20 quid for a pair of them.

i've said it before, it is possible to mix on headphones, if you know how they translate, but still its supposed to be played through speakers, and there is no such thing as a ''true reference headphone''.

but that hdphex plugin takes away all the artificialness and is essential for headphones

If you get to know your headphones you can get an okay sound, and if it's the only way to make music at present, by all means do it! You will have learned something about make music and mixing by the time you move to a place where you can play loud.

I don't use headphones for the main part of my production, but i often use my AKG K240DF heaphones for checking out details, like clicks, for setting up reverbs and stuff like that.

Bollocks, I've heard excellent mixes done on headphones.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

I haven't bought them yet neither have I heared anything from them, so I take your word that they suck.

I heared the Alesis M1 were good, so I looked to get what I thought was the best.

I use to mix with both, monitors and headphones. It only depends on how good you know
your speakers or headphones, but on the other side i worked today three hours on a track with my AKG 271 Studio headphones and when i turned to speakers i realized some click that i haven´t heard with my headphones.I´ve also the problem that if it sounds good on my speakers, it often sounds like shit on my headphones (and the other way around, especially bass)

right now i dont have a choice as im not in my studio.
Im using my sennheiser hd25 and im quite pleased.
I even felt confortable enough to play a new track on a big pa here while i only mixed it on my headphones.
It didnt sound bad at all, after listening in the pa just made some minor adjustments

Only thing impossible with headphones is tuning your subs, for fullon not so important i quess cause most of the time the bass is only mid
But for differnt styles kindoff tricky.

Combination of speakers and headphones works best for me, some artifacts are so small that you can only hear em on your headphones. still nice to try clean that out also.

I use studio headphones for sure to produce and hear my sound closely but you still need to produce on monitors to get a nice stereo sound of what it's going to sound like on massive ones.           SPLINTER

I do produce with headphones just because I still don't have a pair of monitors...

I do produce with the headphones and after every production session, I listen to the track on another 2 sound systems, so I can adjust the mixing...

after this, when the track is almost ready, I send it to some friends that have monitors, so they listen to it and say to me if it sounds good...

i have been using headphones all summer(been traveling) and getting crap for mixes so i bought a 30$ set of computer speakers and made the best mix of my life on them so ya produce on headphones but you will probably need to mix on monitors (or junk computer speakers hehe)           www.anomalisticrecords.com
