Not everyone I got very very lucky with my current room and, whilst it's not impossible that treating it somehow might improve it, it's the best-sounding room I've ever worked in.

There are built-in cupboards (used for clothes storage) either side of and above the mix position and a thin partition wall at the back, behind which is a large cupboard/room used for storage. Together they work as huge bass traps; the bottom end is really well controlled across the room with a slight buildup in the corners (aka 'club corner' when we're checking bass levels). Heavy velvet curtains cover the window and my bed keeps floor-to-ceiling reflections down and soaks up just enough low mids to stop the room sounding boxy; I have lots of books on my shelves behind me, arranged as diffusers. There's no noticeable reverb, no flutter and no nasty resonances that I can hear... Ott came to visit me once and the first thing he did was clap his hands and say "Blimey, it sounds good in here, you can't hear the room at all" There's a man who's ears I trust.

I've learned most of what I know about music production in that room, partly I think because the combination of my speakers in that room leaves very little (I think ) between me and the music. I've engineered 4 albums which lots of people have said sound very good, and done countless masterings... Like I said maybe it could be better but it's been excellent for me so far.

If I'd had to spend a few hundred pounds to get this result I would gladly have parted with the cash as a good-sounding room is hugely enabling. Of course anyone's mixing will improve over time as they get used to their room, and I've been in there for 8 years now, but my production levels made a big jump when I moved in there.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I also had to to some DIY treatment in my very small 2.5x4 meter room... it's better now, but far from really good.

Best are normal living room environments, a cupboard, a table, curtains, a vase, a plant etc. etc.

I know many people who moved from their "home studio" in their bedroom to a dedicated sound-room and then for the first time had the need to treat the room.           Most of my music for you to download at:

Agreed...My studio doubles as a living room right now and there are tons of plants and furnature with a kitchen that wraps around the corner behind me.
Most of the reflections end up dead in the kitchen.

My room actually sound very good compared to some studios I've been in. The only place I really need to add some treatment is behind my speakers on the wall there and in the corner and I think I would have an excellent sounding room.           ~Airyck~

Colin, your room is awesome. It's a bizzare set of variables and luck that seems to work really well!

I remember a few years back when you gave me some beginner lessons, I was pretty amazed at the sound for the size and shape.

I love your speakers too, you still using the same ex-BBC ones? I love quirky older speakers. I used to have some ancient Wharfdale Diamonds but the tweeters went and I couldn't get replacements. There is something about older speakers which I really get off on - maybe it has something to do with lack of computer aided design years ago, and more human listening tests and tweaks?

Yeah, still using the Richard Allans, and they're still great. I have the Opus guys coming round in a couple of months to demo their new Ultra-Fi amps (when they've built them) and some custom ISO8's, probably going to make me sick as a parrot.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I hang a duvet on a mic stand if I'm using a particularly top-endy kick... other than that... fuck it.
