I never wanted to use loops or samples of any kind because I wanted to be unique.. 5 years after saying that, I still refuse to use loops. But I have a collection of one shot samples CDs that are really bizzare and I do use a little bit - machine noises, some orchestral hits. I use Stylus, but I use all 8 parts and program my own hits.

It's been excellent for the learning process doing everything manually, now I would say my own work is as good as loops and I can get what I want out of my head much faster than searching for hours on CDs.

But on the other hand, I know loads of people that reach straight for the loops when they're making a track, they get good results and non-producers aren't going to know the difference. But I just like to have the tweak factor throughout the writing process.
Doing it manually makes it easier to do fills and breaks too I think.

Man you can mangle and fuck up loops to the point that no one will ever be able to tell EVER that it came from a sample cd.. it's really really fun.

yeah i mentioned rex files too cause it takes magling samples further by further messing with pitch .. right now im thrilled using Nine volt audio Funky Rex Guitars on Stylus Rmx. its really fun doing so and the results are very weird in a musical sense. i mean id be break to be able to record my own guitar, but being able to do this is just fun as hell..and fast.. a real fix!           www.soundcloud.com/elektroakustica/sets/downtempo/

i use alot of audio samples as well synths

its not like that peaple buy sample cds to listen to them , it exist exacly for us , so just make whatever you can to get best result..

and no , dont take one folder of loops that fit eachother and call it your track , this is realy smartas , but using 3 diffrent loops chopping and re-arrange them is not any less work then create all alone , just with better result sometimes           www.sattelbattle.com

uhm, pardon my curiosity: what is rhythm structure of your production??? is it 4X4, 3/4, 5/4, 6/8???

I use alot of samples mostly percussion, effects, drums, for few reasons:

i can always re-arrange the inner structure of the loop, chop 'em, cut 'em, slice/dice, make them 1000 times more interesting then they were before.

i don't want to waste time "re-inventing the wheel", why not just modify one.

In my opinion, it all depends on how the musician uses the samples. Afterall, no one cares if a painter uses primary colors, what matters is how he mixes them into his artwork.

Music Shouldn't have rules, guidelines, limits, or ristrictions (painting by numbers). If it sounds good, use it!

i never use loops, but for all kind of percussion i use one-shots from libraries. My favourits are Best Services Drums Overkill (for snares, hats, cymbals, and kicks sometimes) and Battery 3 Library for ethno drums.

just be open minded about this subject sometimes slicing and arranging premade loops will give you a more fitting feel, it all depends on the track. i teamed up with a friend of mine to make a Drill, IDM kinda project...and it really started to sound better when i compromised a bit on my Trance production approace on making almost everything from scratch, while he agreed to drop the slicer a bit.

also i can recall making a lead from one shot samples and i'm sure i'm not the only one. samples are good!

Most of my hybrid synth percussion sound sare made with samples. You have no idea how hard you can fuck up a sample. Where is that "make a psytrance track with a fart sound" thread when you need it?           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog
