It depends on the track
and how good you are in knowing what is needed to make it feel complete.... Its difficult, but give it time and it will come...
most crucial is the timing in the arrangement...
Put focus on that, you can always change sounds later on so go with the flow...

I'll put down a number, just my opinion, but I think it's hard to make an interesting psytrance track with less than 20 different sound channels.
In the end, the only thing that matters is how you use them. Some people who are good at composition can do more with less sounds. http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Yeah but then with "less sounds" it makes me think of layering to get a full and rich picture..... so even with less sounds you still need more channels sometimes

i like when it s a bit like a real band ,batterie (beat) basss guitar (bassline) 2 guitars (leads) synthetiseur(pad and fx)... the more sound playing at same time the more thin the production is in many case cause you can t use big sounds. |

Funny thing is the latest minimal (kinda) techno stuff I do is more channels than the trance stuff I do which sound a lot busier, arrangement wise, but they are not.
Good To Be Alive was something like 24 tracks. I wanted to make a tune that is based on a long sequence of a bassline (it was 4 bars long!).

cheers mate I was humming the bassline in my mind all night long when I was working behind the bar. I rushed home to write the midi file as soon as I got off work (6am in the morning!) cause a bottle of 7 year old rum, would definitely erase it from my memory by the time I woke up the next day. Writing a 4 bar arpeggio bassline, piss drunk, is not an easy task...
Its one of my favourites as well

For a decent composition? Nah, look at it this way - decent composition means that it's good, but not very good and definitely not the best. Leave that. For a great unrestricted composition you should have as much sounds as for the track to sound complete and as little as to not create chaos.
Don't restrict yourself to asking questions like 'how much sounds should i have'. Rather, start working on the track and add sounds you like and fit into each other and try to change them constantly so the whole track doesn't come out sounding the same.
The music - it's all in your mind!

I tend to have heaps of tracks. I love switching back n forth between leads, always bringing in something new. I also have stuff on low volume going on in the background which only gets noticed with a good listen. I feel it gives a bit of depth.
It's about personal preference tho and what you want to do with the track. I hate minimal so I try n go polar opposite

The intelligent way to do it is to use as few tracks as possible, but with great and entertaining sounds in them of course.
Personally We are not that intelligent and our TimeDrained tracks usualy end up having around 150 tracks. :-/
