How many instruments do you use per track?

As a new producer, I'm still completely overwhelmed by the range of noises I can make with my VSTs - every time I find a new sound that I like, I want to make something with it, but then it doesn't fit my current composition, so I start a new one, or branch out in a way that doesn't flow very well.

So, I decided if I'm ever going to get a track done (4 weeks and I've not come close yet!), it's probably best if I decide on a decent selection of sounds to use, and stick with them at least until the arrangement is finished, then start thinking about changing things.

I'm interested to know if that's something many people are doing, and also roughly how many different (and which ) sounds I should aim for to have all the bases covered for a decent, unrestricted composition.

All input greatly appreciated!

For a decent composition? Nah, look at it this way - decent composition means that it's good, but not very good and definitely not the best. Leave that. For a great unrestricted composition you should have as much sounds as for the track to sound complete and as little as to not create chaos.

Don't restrict yourself to asking questions like 'how much sounds should i have'. Rather, start working on the track and add sounds you like and fit into each other and try to change them constantly so the whole track doesn't come out sounding the same.

The music - it's all in your mind!           Triplag Music

As less as possible...not because of CPU, my quad 2.66 xeon processor MacPro can handle massive loads without breaking a sweat. But I am a "less is more" kind of person. My favourite tunes always involved less instrument tracks.
By that I mean tracks that have leads and such. I do find my self using more and more tracks for little FX that I want dedicated EQ, reverb and modulation delay inserts and I do tend to layer a lot of things for the new stuff we are doing...so it sounds like there are not a lot of tracks, although there are quite a few doing different things you perceive as one big thing.

I used sometimes my didgeridoo but the accoustics was shit so far so I tend to use my korg sometimes or vsts
And vsts I first thaought as much 'in harmony' as possible is better but along my beginner process I like now less much less of tracks and it even somehow gets more complicated with the possibilites or new things I learn but maybe more sense.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

You can use 100 different instruments in your track, but it doesn't meen that they should all play at the same time.

It also doesn't mean that the track will be good.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

If you want to play with new sounds, record some short snippets and then start pasting different ones every four bars. You can then increase the pace of the track by subdividing that, so you maybe have a new sound every 2 bars.

Adds some excitement to the music, but doesn't need to be a full fledged lead.

Use your ears, work the flow, and save presets...
Just because you made a cool sound does not meen you need to use it now...
Save it for later.           \\\"Invoking the inner dancing buddha with future frequencies from beyond\\\" ~GyPsy

I never count them but my CPU does, so I have to export some parts where I used short noises, melodies on wav then reload as sample files which sucks because later on I want em to tweak :S.

Well, why don't you leave the synths/midi info after u export them to wav, just mute them so they don't use cpu? Than u can tweak em later and export again.           Triplag Music

Well that's a good tip but still messy for me, save/load/tweak a little/save/load again, I'm lazy...I should train myself applying that tip more frequently, maybe I'll get used to it

If you mute them they still use cpu right? I mean what would freezing be for otherwise?

If you have cool sounds that don't fit the track you are working on save the preset under a usefull name and go back later in a new track to work it out. Or write it down. Don't be afraid to skip cool stuff especially if it is okish but not really cool. Sometimes something is really good but just doesnt fit the track you are working on. Don't worry about it you ll find more cool stuff later!

just put them off (on/of swithc), you don't need to freeze after export...
they will not use any cpu then...

In my latest track I used about 150 different sounds all as one hitters leading on from the next... it took ages. I think in future I'm going to use long evolving sounds instead and then just fill gaps and punctuation with smaller more subtle sounds.

Mixing over 100 tracks is a bitch.
