Hi pple
Let's talk about how many headroom do you keep during a mix of a psytrance song..
(mixing ITB)
I usually keep the higher peak @-5dB FS , and RMS lies between -20 and - 18 dB FS
I think the crest factor i obtain is too much high and the song tend to be distorted in the mids when i compress it for
the following "pseudo-mastering" i do.
what do you think about it guys?
Btw the highest peak are caused by kick & percussive elements , the more i compress it more muddy sound I obtain and I don't want it.

I never bother to look.
I stick the kick at -10 and mix around that, nudge it up over the course of making the whole track if it needs it, tame overly dynamic tracks with compression if they need it. Job done.

Since i calibrated my monitors according to the K-System, my mixing & mastering life has become so much easier.
Mixing with the K-20 and mastering with the K-14 resulted that my mixes and masters are far from loud considering today's loudness wars, but i like it a lot more and they beg for cranking up the volume to reveal their full potential.
A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life. |

I usually make kick and bassline group track peaking around -6 ~ -5 dB,
when done so, the master track usually has peaks around -3 ~ - 2 dB
Don't know about RMS lever, never looked...

Elad, it is pretty well known in mastering circles that heavily compressed and limited music fatigues the listener and people will tend to turn the volume down after a while.
Dynamic, breathing music doesn't have this effect. On the contrary, people tend to turn it up! (If they like the music of course).

so turn up the volume in your stereo
is that what u do ???
i find not any album with loewr rms i turn up but sometimes i do it for heavy compressed stuff... (maybe its just the content?)
also some musics u can keep turn up and its pleasure while others have the "turn me down" effect , this for sure comes from extra unwanted rms
i reken it got alot with clean sound , since cleaner stuff can be compressed more easy.. is that the right ??

Thanks a lot guys ,
I'm a little scared to calibrate m monitors whit Bob Katz's K-System cause my room is not yet acoustcally treated and it's a quite little (3,70*2,40m)
I use a pair of TAPCO S8 ;
I suspect keeping SPL levels around 83 dbSPL causes a lot of modes.
Btw i need a phonometer too , to calibrate (what calibration curve?) or i can get it with a measure microphone like the cheap Berhinger ECM 8000?
About oudness war i think that only musician skilled and aged listeners consider a breathing song good (me too but are1%).
99% of people prefer louder songs to breathing songs cause they're used to listen only loud songs and don't know the benefit of cranking up the knob
cheers

I'm not any expert but will tell you one tip...
Mastering for CD and for Live PA are 2 dif things.
If you have high volumes you guarantee that will sound punchy and it wont distort even pushing it to the max (in your face) on the PA's !
All you need to know is how to do it, you don´t need to push that hard too (like if you only loose the dynamics at very small parts less than 1% of the whole track )...
Nobody fatigues with this settings.
About the headroom in my opinion you are the judge, if you have a -0.1 db headroom and the sound doesn´t clip what will be the matter ?
