If you want a good example,I haven't heard anyone mix several melodies better then Cosmosis, maybe you should check his tracks to get some point of reference.

I'd say the best example in psytrance - by very far - when it comes to music theory, melodies and such deep music stuff

I say it depends on how many you think is necessary.
I think it was Mozart who played an intrinsic and complex piece of music to an Emperor, who responded "that's good, but it has too many notes".
To this Mozart replied "it doesn't have a note too many or a note too less", or something like that... you get the point.
Some producers can make a whole tune out of the simples one note melody with the same bassline and drum pattern (like just about every house music producer..), others need to go out of the normal standard western tuning and search for odd notes and frequencies and debit as many variations as possible.
It's all up to you! I just have to make one request: make it interesting. If you get that, then everything else doesn't even matter.
