Whats more important than having melodies is understanding why they are there and what theyre meant to do.
If they just are extra filler then rather leave them out. On the other hand if you want to achieve a particular effect then you would have to think how the melodies enhance that, in which case the correct answer is how ever many you need to achieve that effect.
For example. a robotic repetitive sound could just be a simple repeating vocoder melody.
A dancing groovey sound could require a bassier melody that reinforces the down beats of the groove, and maybe another higher one to reinforce the up beats, making people jump up.
A relaxed atmosphere would probably require a slow long repeating evolving theme.
A building, creative atmosphere might have some dynamic fast elements elaborating around a grander theme with its own momentum. Then maybe at the peak there would be an anticlimax where contrast goes completely opposite for a well deserved change and rest.
Melodys have purpose in music, one that is made up (ONLY by the artist, and only the artist is accountable for its meaning and purpose) but nevertheless one that HAS TO be there to tell the story. (You know - to make it memorable) You should resist putting one in if you dont know what its supposed to do.
I was listening to a misted muppets set, and the dude just slaps together all sorts of similar melodies. The tracks dont change energy, and what results is just insipid melody after insipid melody. When Dynamics dont change tracks become very tedious, because you can only be at one energy for so long before you get tired and bored. Music has to go up and down in energy to create immersion.
If he had used contrasting melodies and beats and moods at different times, he could hold on to the audiences attention far more effectively.
Liquidnoise you should try to understand contrast and continuity, and how they affect people, to write effective melodies. |

Uedi - Melodies != emotions.
To prove that think of a cheezy melody and ask yourself if it makes you emotional.
The point is that some melodies can make you emotional, but not all and not necessarily. The composers task is to make all the elements of the track come together and make the listeners emotional. One such device is melody. But the hardest part is to get them all to work together for a purpose instead of just mashing everything together.

exactly, how to make them work together ?
coz i made i think really good melody but i thought to upgrade it adding extra melody i some part of the song. But when i tried to make it nothings sounded right even if it was in harmony with first one...
Anyway today i was listening and analyzing some of my favorite songs and i noticed there is usually one melody and thats it. Sometimes its kind of melody which is played on chords in harmony with certain rhythm. Sometimes added passing notes, sustained notes etc. |

liquidnoise - in order to be able to make the whole thing work together, you have to work top down not bottom up. i.e. you know what its supposed to do, and you basically fill in the parts, not begin with loose parts and hope they gel.
The problem is that in order to work top down you have to understand how harmony, dynamics, rhythm, structure, groove, contrast, continuity all work together - basically composition.
theres a very good link about composition I posted in the mother of all music theory thread. check it out.
also highly reccomended is the book about how music affects the brain.

If you want a good example,I haven't heard anyone mix several melodies better then Cosmosis, maybe you should check his tracks to get some point of reference.
