this was inspired by the Raja ram bashing thread, it is however in no way related to it in its nature:

How long can artists remain artists in this scene? i mean, life is good and fun when you are 20 - playing gigs, making tracks... years pass by youre 25 - still banging chicks on the road (or dudes), drugs (or not), still making music, now getting more known globally...
now youre 30, you start thinking of settling down... this is when you either have a significant other or you start considering one... gigs are still coming, chicks are still being picked up at shows... life is still good.
35-40... you start running out of ideas, your ears are pretty damaged from playing all these years, youre stuck in some software that u know, but the kids of the time are coming up with newer fresher ideas, innovating all the time... youre "stuck".
now what? youre 40+, 50+ and somehow survived this tough scene to this point... gigs are not easy to come by, your name is not so hot anymore...
how do you provide food for your family? or even there is no family, how do you support yourself?

think about these things and you will find that raja ram specifically is a good example of someone who planned ahead before he ran out "musical" ideas... he had a backup plan of a managerial concept. although he is extraordinary in his physical health and still is a hot name by all means, he has devised a way to keep the business going long after the magic ends.

i know my father (55) has a great job, makes great money and has several companies around the world... this does not mean however that he can quit today or even tomorrow, he will simply exhaust his funds... think ahead people, artists, labels as a whole.

Although Raja Ram has probably been making music for decades. You'd think he's probably been doing trance for less than 10 years. Like all musical artists, this is just one of the many stops you make before moving on. Long-term, viable, artists tend to explore wholly different genres. This is why people like Madonna, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, etc have lasted so long. But it does seem that when you become successful you tend to get weighed down by the scene around you (that provides your success). Expectations form from fans and making a quick genre change can seemingly wreak confusion on their part. This, in some ways, is indictment on the fans too. What if Raja we're to put out a "flute jazz" album? No doubt more than a few psy-trancers are going to listen and say "this is shite, mate!" For Raja, this has probably been his most wildly successful musical period and it's rather difficult to move on and explore other regions. I dunno, I haven't heard the latest collection, maybe he's trying to explore and we're not going for it. But, in general, it usually appears that artists tend to get stuck into something ("good"), especially later in life.

I'm, by most standards here, an old fogey, pushing 40. Been around the musical block a few times, certainly in terms of being a musical artist. Trance is my latest stop in my music journey. It would be amusing to have a similar level of success (that's a relative term, of course)as Raja. Good news for me is that he was probably well into his 40's before it hit him. Patience, grasshopper, patience.

The problem with being this old is that the ideas start to back-up in the 'ole system. Nothing that a little Psyllium husk won't clear out ;^> tons of ideas though, not enough time.
