@ nikC...just for interest. mozart was actually one of the composers that could arrange a masterpiece in no time at all.
if you are passionate about music creation , you should know that it`s better to just listen and be interested in how many difirent ways other artist go about writing music, instead of trying to correct them or tell them that they are doing it the wrong way.@there is NO right or wrong way. |

I'm sure that many people react the same way as you NikC and it's cool that you voice your opinion.
I used to think in a similar way as I said.
But remember, most music always has been created in realtime.
So I guess one can ask if it's really making music sitting working on 8 minutes of music for several weeks.
For me at least concentration and inspiration does not go hand in hand, and the latter is more important.
Of course I'm not always really inspired and then concentration is what enabels me to finish a track.
You find the same kind of discussion is most music genres though, and of course there is no right and wrong but matter of finding a way that works for you.
But to say that it's more "real" music because it took longer time to create or required more concentration I would say is wrong.

lolol... sometimes i get that feeling...
so many hours spent perfecting the KbBb tecnique it has to a pretty good bassline to not sound more of the same to my ears
i agree with some here that my best stuff was made quite kickly.
sometimes is hard to go back and improve those moments of inspiration but it is what must be done
the creative complex is a very complex one, there aint a correct way or a wrong way we can only judge the final product
those last days i've discovered that the best way for me to start is with a very standard set of leads, bass and drums
after i get that right i start improving and twisting into something more original, when i can...
something told me that we first have to copy and only after that try to do better... not 100% what i'm doing but almost...
  roll a joint or STFU :) |

Hi, i guess my input has been slightly misinterpreted. Apologies if i offended anyone.
@damage, I do know Mozart was able to create masterpieces in a flash, but they are linearly written, and not just elements thrown together. It is music achieving a point, whether that be for practise or for perfection, and not just music for the sake of it (hope you get what i mean).
What i merely feel is that if you put no particular focus on production or structure, it is like having sheet music with no dynamics or progression.
This may be purely because I don't understand this method of working coming from a classical background.
@Spindrift
I do understand exactly what you mean, about inspiration taking control and wanting to let rip on a piece of music as soon as you get the idea to get it out of your head.
I think this may be where we differ, I get the idea and then create a structure as I go along... start with the beginning and end with the end so to speak. My opinions can only be based on what I know
Alla gör musik på sina olika sätt... vissa koncentrerar sig på ljud, andra struktur andra melodin... alla metoder e nog lika bra www.myspace.com/beat_nik |

P.s... LAST thing i want to do is tell anyone how to work!
Everyone has their own style, method etc..
I am just intrigued by methods which seem entirely alien from my own
Peace!

yes, i totally agree with you on this. i love composing music with a complicated, but dynamic, tight and timeconsuming structure to arrange that all fits with good harmony, playing complicated keys , but all musically correct, with some sort of story behind the song. this takes alot of hours to do.
BUT doing music in a fast, not so complicated way, so it may sound like the street trax, is not so bad either. there is something very pure in that. this music you listen to when you don`t really want to concentrate on a song, lyrics or composition. you just wanna groove on it, or chill on it or not even focus that much on it. music at it`s simplest form, yet very affective and serving it`s perpous. |

i have a different way of working. i only work at one track per time. when i have a new idea i build it and save it... and i spend a lot in sound quality before i start arranging the track. when i start arranging i already have everything mixed and the melodys in midi files hehe
all this because i like to arrange as fast as possible (the ideal is doing a part of the track, like, the build up after the intro till the first break, on one session, then stop a bit).
if you ask me how much time i take to arrange a song... maybe 4 to 6 hrs. how much time i take to make a track? that's a month or two.
maybe after this track i get a template i like (i like for now) and i can work on songs without spending so much in sound quality.
PS: i spend 2-10hrs a week on Cubase... i can't really give a good estimate of how much time in hours i work on a track... but something like 20-30. |

I usualy write my tracks in linear fashion except for the intro and outro. So I start at the beginning and work forward to the end. The basics of good tracks are usualy written quite fast. Maybe 1 or 2 days work.
After the main part is written, I will fine tweak stuff a bit and add an intro and outro. I try and get things sounding good right from the beginning or I won't be happy working on it. Not only that, if everything needs tweaking, you can loose touch with the essence of the track.
