well i see i usually dont take so long as most people here. and i always start from scratch. never used or created my own templates even..
So usually a good track goes for 3 days in the studio with less sleeping possible. i only take 1 week or more making a track if i m not working on it full dedication, usually during the week time is hard for me to have like 12 hours free in one day..
but never 3 weeks.. only if i only open the track to work on it from time to time, but that usually dont happen. i have tons of projects that are not finished cause at the end of a week i dont feel "stamina" needed for that.. i get bored to listen more than 1000 times in 2 or 3 days without getting it finished, so i start other one... hehehe

3 days to 2 months depending on how my computer is acting and how much free time I have. Sometimes, it can take as little as a day to get the initial sketch of the song going, but I usually spend 1 day just on sound design and a couple of days on the arrangement and last minute tweaking...

if by the end of a week, considering 2 to 8 hours a day playing, i feel not happy with whats done, i can give the benefit of the doubt and give it another week try lol or just quit... but if happy it can take months to have something, but this projects regurlarly turn into the ones most far to get finished
but than i don't have schedules.
about the long periods for a track, i believe it's not of the dedication and the time you took with it, but into what you can turn a project to, and this on you... it's nothing magical, more the kind of a *cof*anal*cof* transcendental experiences |

this makes no sence!? I also produce downbeat and psytrance but I spend much more time with downbeat tracks. Due to lower tempo sound intervals are also longer and it's much more complicated to program the samplers and synths in order 2 sound interesting and dynamic. Tuning the reverb on a snare drum that runs 144 bps is a walk in the park comparing to same job with snare drum on 98 bpm etc. But that's just my point of view.
There's no timeframe for making a track, and track is never really finished. But eventualy at some point we run out of ideas or techical knoweledge and that's forcing us 2 call it "done". The better the track is the more it will inspire us and we'll spend more time trying 2 make it perfect.
Also I think that track needs to be "forgotten" for a few days when you catch yourself saying: "this is really a great track!" Don't even listen it for 5-7 days. Sometimes this is more usefull than hours of work.
and again... it's just the way i see it

yes, there is no timeframe for doing something creative. you cannot force creativity to happen.
there is also not just 1 way of doing music...or just 1 way of knowing when a song is done. some ppl decide a song is done when you run out of ideas, others have a vision of what it should sound like when it`s done. there`s no rules with this kind of thing. whatever works for you, works for you ;-) |

Like I said... track is never really finished 'cause it can allways be better!!! Once you loose this feeling it's time to retire
Even when I'm satisfied with it I hear few things that could have been better, and I have never run out of ideas so far... thou I'm not so lucky with tools, knoweledge and materials
But sure... we all have our ways and goals. And the goal is what determines when your track is called "done"

personally i take anything from a week to 2 months to finish a track. Even if i have alot of inspiration, I enjoy the whole process of creating subtle sounds and subtle effects which take more time to do
