WE NEVER ARE TOTALY SATISFIED WITH A TRACK!!!!!!!!
all artist think that theyr track wants something more we never can gain perfection so iff you fall in that trip you never going to finish a track

im satisfied only when from start to end i can dance and follow it if i cant reach that in a tune i dump it and go for a pizza or make sex or smoke joint and start a new one

An average of around 100 hours per track, spread over anything from one weekend (fuck that's hard work but worth it!) to one year... Some tracks take more though.

As for finishing a track, there comes a time, when the arrangement has been completed, when I honestly can't think of anything I could do to make it better. That's when I consider the tune to be finished.

And yes, I hear those little riffs in the background too when I listen to my track looping over and over...           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

a day or two to get an idea.. and then a few months to even a year .. maybe 2 years even or longer.. who knows.. (thats been the longest for me so far..) to work out all the details.. guess im slow and hmm in hours?? wouldnt even want to know myself actually... the hours alone already of listening to the track.. in one day i can say somewhere between 5min the worst case.. but mostly between 4hours to almost an 18hours (also in the worst case)

colin... when ever is a track really finished.. its finished for the time being maybe.. when u listen after letting it rest for a few months might think completely different about it, no?..and u always learn new stuff.. new trixx.. i know for sure its really hard to really finish a track and keep thinking that (for me atleast).. even if u listen after half a year or so..
ill push u over the edge, and will be smiling when u cant take anymore, at that point ill push a little harder till u experience true psychdelica

Damn this internet... that wasn't meant to be an arrogant statement, but reading it back now I can see how it sounded that way.

What I meant was that finishing tracks is a vital step towards getting them released; I know several people who have fantastic ideas and who have started loads of tracks, but once the first rush of inspiration has passed their writing process gets bogged down and they never get any of their ideas to a state where it could be played out at a party, let alone released.

Because your name wasn't in blue I assumed you hadn't been released yet (which I now know to be untrue - an assumption I obviously should not have made) and I was just trying to make the point that if you find it hard to finish tracks, this could be one reason why.

I'm sorry if I came across as being a wanker; that's something I try very hard to avoid but, as you can see, no-one gets it right all the time!

Good luck with your projects...

he he he...same thing may happen to the tracks you create also, if you get what im trying to say...

back to topic:

well, for me i've become very slow off late. i used to complete a track in about a month (2-3 hrs everyday of the month). Now its taking me anywhere btn 3 months to a year.

Maybe i've become slow, maybe too many other things to do in life. Maybe, its good after all that i don't go ahead and do tracks at lightning speed           Interviewer: "So Frank, you have long hair. Does that make you a woman?"
Frank Zappa: "You have a wooden leg. Does that make you a table?"

Yeah probably you arrive to a state and make 1 track in 1 day but i doubt the quality of it! When you take long time is because you take long time to make your sounds sound the way you want them to sound! I love working for a long time on a track it makes it even more special! as i said depends on the quality you like and on how complicated your theory will be!

colin.. my idea on tracks is that each one of them is on of your babies.. each one of them deserves equal treatment, care and love.. so yes i also think finishing a track is very important.. what i mean is that u could make different versions on different moments.. so when is a track ever finished? i know i got quite a lot of versions of different tracks..and sometimes months later i start on the same track again.. like for instance in jazz performers play their tracks in different versions aswell
but indeed i still have a lot to learn.. so when i improve on something or have an idea for a certain old track i wont doubt making it better again.. or just different..

maybe im naive but i like to think writing music is like writing a novel.. people who think a good song can be finished in one day.. well tell me a good book that was written in one day.. maybe write less tracks and give more care to the ones u write..

back to colin.. well my name isnt blue yet cos so far i have no psytrance releases.. could change soon though.. but i do have some stuff out in a style that doesnt really matter here..

ps: colin.. with the music u make.. u have the right to be arrogant ..loved ur set here in belgium few years back.. alot..just keep it inside a bit
say hello to michael btw.. (xavier)

keep it funkki

ill push u over the edge, and will be smiling when u cant take anymore, at that point ill push a little harder till u experience true psychdelica

I guess this is the difference between the way you and I write; I only do one version of a track so it's much easier for me to know when it's finished. I hate remixing my own music as I'd much rather write a new tune than make an old one sound better! Also, your comparison with jazz players might be valid for live performances, when we all try to give the dancefloor versions of the tracks different from those on the CD, but even with jazz, when they're working on an album the performers try and nail one specific particular version of a track for the record.

I find that writing fast preserves the enthusiasm and inspiration that makes you want to write a particular track in the first place, and lets it come through much more clearly to the listener... this inspiration can often be lost if you find yourself spending hours and hours... and hours... and hours working on a tune. You might need to spend more time mixing it later on though! My particular lesson with this was with the Fluorostani EP, released on Flying Rhino in 1996. Those two tracks took 5 days to write, record and mix - and it was Flying Rhino's biggest-selling 12".

I'm very glad you like what you've heard, but I don't have the right to be arrogant - no-one does. Like I said, my previous comment was not about the relative quality of our music, but about comparing how easy it is for you and I to get our tracks to a stage when we're able to show them to record labels - an essential first step to getting them released!
