how do you people do it
or how it should be done ?
do you switch them off for some time ?

its true that the alesis get too hot after a while...
what I do is always switch them off when I dont need them (in short production breaks or so)

I have MKII for more than 4 years. I've switch them off just a few times during those 4 years. They are powered trough UPS to provide steady voltage and prevent damage from power loss.
From my experience electronic devices suffer more from switch on-offs than from constant working. Same goes for my DAW. I restart when I have to but it can go on for days without restarting.
Each turning on and shut down is a "shock" for circuit boards and since I've changed my philosophy and I keep devices powered 24/7 I have lot less problems with failures. I've noticed that during my last job. Company had over 30 PC units that ware constantly switched on. During 3 years there was no single failure. Devices are usually designed to work without brakes.
Once again... I have devices powered trough UPS in order to provide steady voltage and avoid power loss.

So what your saying is that you have active monitors without a amp in any of them?
So how exactly do you power them if not with an amp
Thats a new phenomenon.

I think it's not good to switch them off for a short while to cool them down.
With most electronics a lot of the wear comes from the actual powering up and expansion and contraction of heating and cooling.
Anyway, like fraggletrollet says they should be designed for prolonged use and that they get hot is normal and expected.
For me my ears is the weak link...they get exhausted after more than 4hrs and I have to take a break.
But I always leave my speakers on all day and only turn them of when I go to bed.

ok i was getting paranoid without any reason
i see everybody's monitors getting hot from back.
and i've also seen that none of u switch them off
so i'm also gonna use them 24 hrs without switching them off
it's just that i was little concerned about my monitors and didn't want any damage to happen to them
@ vegetal : i have m-audio fast track pro sound card and i've conected my monitors directly into them.
and my all equipments are connected with a ups from last
1 year.
active monitors have amps inbuilt
my monitors are Bi-Amplified
so i just saved some money by buying active monitors instead of buying passive monitors with an external amp.

we work on our dyna bm5a for long hours and they are working great.
turning them off isnt the best thing cos the monitor will cool down and than it will perform worse than when its warm it kinda like cars moving parts and lubricants work better when warm(not hot)

hmm ..care to explain the physics behind that ? how can u compare a car which is machinery and lubricated parts to monitors ..which is electronics .. is akin to comparing a cellphone with a toaster .. or no ?
