How is this sound made? (Distorted TB???)

Hi all!
Got a new dilemma - what makes this sound so rich and powerful? Think that is an amaaaazing distortion but can't make it with cubase dist, amplitube and my virus's distortion. What are the filters - one or 2, hp or bp? And the main thing - distortion - can you advise me any VST that can make this kind of hard and pure distortion? Or maybe I just tweak it any wrong way?
The sound is often used in psy nowadays - for example Alien Project - Massive Passive (Global Trance Network) and the one that is in the example - second track of new X-Wave album.

This is probably an annoying answer - but I have an Boss DS-1 distortion pedal, that will do just that to almost any sound.
I'm not very smart on distortion, but almost any besides overdrive will get this sound I think - it's sounds pretty heavily distorted, and gained - with most enrgy in the top-range of the spectrum.
For the distortion-freak (not me, I can't hear one from the other...) I think there is a very distinct difference to the different types of distortion, of which they are as many as there are ways to process sound - sample-based clipping, analog, phase-based distortion, spectrum-based - whatever... It's probably best to find an article or tutorial on this, and try them out  |

DiMT what are you using for the tb sound itself - that has alot to do with it as well. certain vst's are far superior then others.

I make all my sounds on Virus, but tried Cubase A1 and V-Station + some VST distortions. Another question: should I use filter overdrive or distortion effect which comes after the filters?

I managed to do something similar with A1 with the SX distortion. If i'll find the preset i'll put it online.
Why do you want to sound like Alien Project anyways?

i honestly dont get these responses..... what if in his mind this sound has the potential to do something very diffrent that the way alien p uses it? just because u want someone's sound doesnt mean u will use it in the same way or even if u do it might not sound the same on your piece.
also try using audiorealism for the tb. "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

I don't want to sound like anybody! Just wanted to learn distortion aspects. I wan't to find my own sound conception, but how can I bring it life if I don't know the basics. This sound is very common, IM, Miko, Alien Project, Intergalactic and others use it. I totally agree with Surrender - why don't I learn how to make it and then try to make something original. How can I do any original things without knowing principles? Now I work on my FIRST track and honestly I don't want to make som kiddy stuff so I sit here and try to learn how the real quality sounds are made. Don't see something bad in it. In the future my target is to write psy-dub-ambient - but now I can't write it because I know very little yet. But I work on it. Sorry, if I sound negative or not right. Peace!
And thank you guys - got this sound! I forgot of having the "Digital Curve" in my Virus' filter overdrive menu. I's extremely hard and makes it just the same way I like. |
