look very closly - maybe from far away - you will notice that on the top triangle the top is bent 'inwards' and on the bottom the top is bent 'outwards'.

pretty obvious...if you check the areas, they both add up to equal amounts.
the key is the angle between the horizontal short side of the triangle and long side...it's an acuter angle on the top figure than on the bottom one. therein lies the key to the hole.

ha ha ha.. this is funny.. been pinned up in our department for a while.. just check the gradients on the two triangles in the bottom 'triangle'.. they are not the same (as luiz has already pointed out in slightly different words (respect  ) hence the 'triangle is not, in fact a triangle..
