I wonder, how is this done.
Are all compressors/limiters and EQ done in realtime or is the signal more pure without all that mastering stuff? |

You mean mastering of a recorded Live show on a CD?

Some (or most?) artists use premastered wav-files to playback. Maybe with some elements left out which they perform live. Therefore as such, mastering is done non-live. In most cases you still need to do some EQ'ing.
I have until recently based my live-act on pure midi, meaning that I have had a lot of EQ'ing to do... but I usually make sure to do this as well as possible when setting up my gear. Then all that is basically needed is a limiter on your main out.

I meant mastering during the liveact, not after it's been recorded.
But during liveacts, is the mastering as perfectionised as when doing a recording for an album or not?
Cuz, would people on the dancefloor really notice if everything is perfectly mastered?
I guess not!? |

when you play mixdowns that are unmastered, newest stuff or mixdowns to more audio tracks, i have experience artist use their premastered versions or just mixdowns with some little touches to sound abit louder and compact. when playing live i use just eq and limiter on master bus to make a fast tweak to the specific PA system i`m playing at to sound as good as possible. very important is to have a good mix in your traxx.

When I am rendering my various channel files for live use I just run everything through a limiter to get everything at roughly the same level. the "mix" and eq details change everything time depending on the venue so there isn't much use doing much else. If your original mix is good there shuoldn't be too much of an issue

Well, this issue made me really forget about "100% live"... Cause 100% live means that all tracks and sound will be glued live... So the output will be non mastered...
For sure u can put a L2 at output, but u will never know for sure wich settings to use, as U will never make same live twice...
I was told that the best is to play non master version at stage, but using a hardware compressor/limiter(like L2)... I´ve never been to any stage with this setup although...

I really doubt that every PA has a better gear than Waves HArdware Compressor/Limiter.... At least here at BRazil, at non comercial parties(1000 ppl), u will not find great gear.
Just to mention I´ve never had a "soundcheck", so all I can do is to pray for my music reaches the level of the dj(usually working on red), as the engineer noramlly don´t trust u to push the volume up...
