I did not know this was a debate about what conversion is best  My point was that it's damn annoying to see pirates convert our studio recordings into bad mp3 quality!
Music is meant to be listened to at the very best audio quality!!!
Today people even settle with horrible Youtube "video's".
Something is dead wrong.

Okay fuck them pirates!! But don't you think it would be better if they released the music in really shitty quality than in quality that could be accepted on larger soundsystems?

In an ideal world yes. But you can not win against these pirates or people's eager to get free music. It's a lost fight! So my conclusion is I rather have people experience my music in the best audio quality rather than some poor converted mp3.

Of course!
This way you get 2 goals out of three: you get your music to the public in a form it's souposed to be heard and you get it into as many ears as possible. You missed only goal number 3 - making money from your CD sales. Compare how much you gain from 1 and 2 (including monetary gain from increased bookings) with how much you lost from not getting to number 3. It seems to me that most people should hope their music gets ripped by some quality-minded pirates then

Ekoplex is spending his entire summer touring around North America--a direct result of the success of his 2008 debut, Journey Of The Turtle.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around why some acts do well and others show no particular increase in bookings... I think it is some combination of free music, self-promotion, networking and connections, word-of-mouth reputation (e.g. between organizers), and style of music. (Here's a paradox: we get to release lots of non-standard music by going free but this isn't always what organizers are looking to book.)
I would never argue that free music leads to more bookings but it can certainly help if other elements are in place. This idea that there is absolutely no connection is demonstrably false however. But hey, it's a work in progress, constantly developing... perhaps we will have something completely different to say in a year or two. After all, the legitimacy of free music is surely on the rise...

There are actually DJs around here who spin -V2 mp3s they download off psytorrents. It makes me sad  . I only spin 320 or lossless
I admit to pirating a lot of music for DJing, but I've still spent far more money on buying music than I've received for DJing (I've spent easily over $2000 on music and only ever been paid to DJ once, and got like $20) |
