1- Kick n Bass combo (KBBB)
I get a short decay fat bass sound on G.
Get a premade audio kick drum that matches it and shorten its length so that its tail doesn't overlap the first bass note.
Then I tweak the bass so that its tail doesn't affect the kick too much.
And finally I EQ the Kick by listening to the bass (I try to lower the frequencies that make the bass jump out).
2- 8 Bar Percussion
I import the hi hat and make a small rhythm with it.
Next I import an Open hat that matches the hi hat.
Then a nice Snare with presence winch I EQ straight away if to bassy.
A rim shot or fx making a counter rhythm.
A lovely Crash cymbal that match the hi hats.
And finally I import 2 or 3 premade synthesised loops that work with it all.
3- Make the loop sound awesome...
After all this I find the root note for the song by moving the bass up and down until I find where it sounds best with the percussion or alternatively I tune the percussion to the bass (winch in cubase 5 its easily done with pitch and warp).
4-All the rest
I Start the intro with pads, vocals, fx, etc, whatever comes to mind. From here on its pretty straight forward, I use that same percussion pattern all the way trough with mutes and Fx and focus on different bass patterns, leads, fx and pads.
Since I've started using this system I start a song in one afternoon with step 1, 2 and 3 and finish it on the 2 afternoons after. 3 days from start to finish. Lovelly.
