I've been writing tracks in Cubase for about a year now, and am pretty comfortable producing with it. A couple of days ago I got Live and AskVideo tutorials, which I've been through. I've also watched all of Tom Cosm's tutorial videos.
While there's a lot of information regarding re-arranging tracks on the fly, I haven't really found a good resource in regards to transitioning between an hour's worth of tracks in a Live set.
I've been playing around with Live for DJing and I'm really digging it.
And would like to use a similar approach for performing tracks written in Cubase, except having control over all the elements of the track.
I bounce out Kick/Bass, Percussion, Pads, Leads and Effects groups from Cubase and import them into 5 tracks in Live. So in essence I have a track per a scene and control over each element. (I'm more interested in using FX, then arranging on the fly)
I would then obviously repeat the process for each track, so having 9 or so scenes in a set.
What I'd then like to do is be able to route each clip of a scene to a new audio channel that will allow me DJ functionality. (Ie a fader, EQ 3 and the ability to set cue/start points for an entire song)
So for 9 scenes, I'd have 2 Audio tracks (A & B)
Scene 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 would goto Track A and Scenes 2, 4, 6, 8 would goto another. (Pretty much mimicking a standard DJ set up, just using 6 different elements per song rather than just the song itself.)
So... How would I go about doing this? I've already run into problems at Step 2, which is routing scenes to a track with the ability of having DJ control over them. How can I set a collective cue point for 6 groups (1 song) simultaneously?
Any ideas? Hope it makes sense.
Or does anyone know of an easier method for performing tracks that've been split into groups? (with more of a focus on tweaking FX then cutting up those tracks into smaller chunks and being able to re-arranging them.) |

Hi Mate,
I've been working for a while preparing my live set for public release, as in pretty much exactly what I do, including my methods of transitioning tracks.
It's been a huge task (the main part making it understandable as I use very strange methods for lots of things) but is on the verge of completion, in fact I was hoping to have it online later this day, depending on a few things.
So, sorry to not answer your question just yet, but shortly I will put up what my solution to the problem is, and a solution that I think works quite well.

Chemogen, you said it all..just go do it.
There's an infinite amount of ways to use Ableton playing live, and that's the point. I always see it as making a choice somewhere between control over all of your tracks and all of the arrangement and just playing the entire tracks in a pre made set. Either extreme isn't a very good idea, since the former is very difficult for one person to do while keeping it interesting, and the latter is just boring (for you and the crowd).
Personally, I work on my Live set and my full tracks separately. When I finish a track I usually bounce some of the really nice loops to throw in the live set, otherwise I just work on the set in small parts, just making 2-3 loops a day and playing sets at home just to practice it and make sure everything's ok. Using this method, if you get to know your set really well you'll know which parts fit together, and you can put a base to work with all in one row, then trigger the entire row with one of the master buttons and go from there.
Just know that it isn't impossible for an electronic musician to play live. It might not be as organic as just playing an instrument, but it is very possible to do on the fly remixes of your tracks, have control over the entire arrangement, and even create new loops while you're playing (especially if you have a nice synth to take with you). If the method you mentioned will give you the same production quality as your full tracks and you'll have fun doing it, go for it, but what you described isn't anywhere near the limit to playing live.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

hehe yeah , i think its the "arrange on ableton" part he asked about.
basicly its all about scenes and folow actions if you after some reading metirial , or just look at tom tutorials and wait for his new live set as he mentioned. . this will just be the real thing instead many many words.

1. Make a folder... ie the track name..
first save all the presets from ur synths into seperate folders, give them names so its easier to remember(albinos in one folder, discovery's in another)
2. next bounce out all the midi files...
and arrange them into the relevant folders u made..
3. bounce out as many seperate wav files, single hit samples, and fx out of the track as u can..
4. bounce out main synth lines, so u can either play midi leads or trigger pre made ones...
5. bounce out percussion loops..
6. bounce kick and bass and sum breaks and fills..
arrange in Ableton live..

^^ Pretty Much... Arranging takes a bit of practise but you will find you can really remix your track in ways you never would have if you were writing it |

Hey,
It's not just a vid, but the entire live set. The only issue I have at the moment is uploading it as it is nearly 400megs and I am on a slow connection for a few more days.
Stand by. |
