It helps to make a clear distinction between your criticism of the production quality and the musical ideas. Anyone can learn how to make the creative ideas sound better, but not many are naturally creative when it comes to the actual content.

And don't tell him to stop making music. He'll figure that out on his own when and if he needs to..all you can do in saying something like that is discourage someone who's already going to have to be extremely patient and persistent to reach a goal that he obviously cares about.

On the other hand, if he's thinking way too highly of his own music, don't let him get disillusioned. Just be honest without being harsh, as you should with everyone.

Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Easiest way Ive found, is to sandwich what you don't like between compliments.

Compliment what you like
Explain what you don't like
Compliment again.

Eg:
"Hey I really like the textures of that synth, although I don't like the melody you've got there, sounds a bit all over the place, work on it a bit more and it will sound sweet. Apart form that, well done anyway dude, I really enjoyed it!"

Of course the opinion that his music sucks is only coming from your point of view, maybe your senses suck? Maybe not.

At the end of the day if the music music they create makes them feel good about him/herself, then i don't think you should say anything. It may not be of any concern to you anyway.

If a friend of mine makes something that doesent appeal to my 'taste', before being judgmental i remind myself how how shit my last bassline or melody was. Then you start to put things into perspective.           The dancing ones were thought to be mad, by the ones that couldent hear the music

So what your saying is that we have no more rights to our own opinions and we are not allowed to talk about them anymore.           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

Remix one of his tracks and make it cool sounding so he understands... you can also add a subliminal voice sample saying: your music sucks
