Well I got this friend who makes this really really ridiculous music. No real musical content there, the notes are just a mess and even the drums sound completely random as if he isn't aware of the Quantize button (I'm sure he thinks it makes it groovier).
If it was dancable 145BPM material I could understand it, nowadays it's in the fashion to put some random sounds over a kick and a heavy bassline, but the guy tries to make Chill Out or Dub or whatever.
How can I tell him that he should quit trying?

if its a friend you shouldnt hesitate to tell him your opinion... not in a rude way, simply tell him the truth and tell him what you dislike. even better would be to help him out, as it seems you've got some basic knowledge yourself...

i guess, thats what friends do...

Don't say, hey your music sucks, just give him those points you listed here. If he takes your critique then that's good, if not maybe you should tell him he should quit.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

you suck as a friend tho...
how he should deal with that?
his music doesnt suck at all , he need more training and learning. only the passion matters.
if he is not dumb then show him why its better to learn scales and music theory and how to apply it. you could mention there is Q button too.
what kind of friendship is this to come here and ask this...
you can always say I DONT LIKE IT and end the story right.. but coming here is some kind of way to proove that his music sux without anyone hear it even.
many friends SUPPORTED me before i got my music together as quality art piece and it all comes down to that , that who cares about the sounds as long i have this amazing friends in life.

Hahaha, Splinter, that is definitely the Canadian approach looool...

I would try to find a tactful way of telling him my critiques, if possible in a constructive way, and I would tell him with heart, so it is not so hard for him. I agree, that this is what true friends are for, and if he is a true friend and you are careful enough to tell him in a manner that won't just freak him/her out then not only will he thank you one day for your honesty, but he will as Tsabi quite aptly put it learn and not lose the passion.

I would agree with most of the people here... Tell him in a nice way, what doesn't sound good. What he might wanna work on. Remember that everyone starts from skratch.

I am glad that I have had a friend to tell me that my music wasn't very good, but had potential.           www.xun.dk / myspace.com/xundk

If your friends likes his own music - it meens that his music doesn't suck. If there is one single person that likes something - it meens that there is someone else that might like that too.

If you friend himself thinks that his music sucks - you can try to help and explain why.

psytrance sucks overall, btw, i hate these random noises and boom-boom-boom!...

Even though I lol'd the hardest at Kode Six's post, I agree most with Medea's.

What i do i simply tell them some things to improve and if i think something is worth to complement even if is just a kick i tell them that and they get happy.
Is the best way for me.
