I know most of you probably use ableton. How is it that you set it up? Do you trigger every loop yourself or do you have a general arrangement that you have layed out previously and then trigger other loop sthat go with it. Please explain a little. I'm fooling with ableton trying to come up with the best way for me to put something together.

That's why I made a point to capitalize the word you. I'm not concerned with right or wrong I was just curious how others do it.

hehe well guess i didn't understood ya mate....
i like to have more or less the set layed out...
but of course not completely cus i do wanna vibe with the people but then i again u need to have the clips already render to make the live sitituation easy... last thing u need is a track ending and the other one is still rendering... which would fuk up ur set...
i like a backbone but not the whole set otherwise it's not live lol... just have a more or less set and flip it according to the crowd... good luck!

i load rendered .wav files (unwarped) into ableton in one long set, adjusting the global tempo to match the tracks. this ensures that FX are in time.

i then have around 10 synths which i will play live. these typically include:

- a few vanguards with high pitch-bend values for big swooshy distorted filter noises
- some simple saw/sine synths with delays and maybe arpeggiators for adding melodic sparkles
- a piano / organ module for funky blues runs
- some nice warm pads
- a really gritty distorted & gated synth for tough lead sounds
- one or two squelchy or clangy FM sounds

i also have about 10 audio channels set up as FX units for the electric violin. all will have EQ and compressors to keep the sound in check. the violin itself runs through a shitty zoom guitar pedal (has great pitch-shifting) and a DI box to clean it up before going into the soundcard. typically the inserts will include:

- a heavily gated, delayed track for precision noises
- a lush reverb/delay for more open acoustic sounds
- at least three different auto-filtered units which work well with pitch variations
- a 'clean' unit with just EQ and compression

the master channel will have a number of effects on it.

- beat repeat or something similar
- autofilter
- reverb for punching in/out

between switching midi channels, playing synths, changing global effects, editing parameters, switching pedal settings, playing violin and tweaking sounds i don't really have much leftover energy to do more. i definitely want to get into more creative live remixing, and am slowly learning to play more synths effectively. at the moment i don't trigger any clips live, which is one of Ableton's strengths, but i feel that the way my live set has evolved i'm better off doing the stuff i do. and i'm still struggling to get the right balance - the violin parts for example need to be higher in the overall mix because people need to be able to hear what you're doing.

incidentally, a question for other live artists - do you ever try to recapture your live work when recording?

whenever i'm playing gigs there are usually moments when i do something which sounds great, and which i would *never* have thought of doing when i was composing a track... and although there have been hundreds of times i've thought 'thank god i'm not recording THIS' there have also been a number of times when i'd love to be able to take what i've done and remix the project to include the live work.

Q: - Are software substitues for bulky live equipment (for effects, processors, synths, etc.)sufficient/good enough to perform live with best sound quality posible?

Any recommendations for your basic requirements?
