My motherboard died.
I just got a replacement. I need to be able to remove the processor from the heatsink in order to fit it to the new board. It is stuck on pretty tightly.
Anyone know a reliable way of doing this without me damaging the processor? |

I have removed hundreds of processors and they all use roughly the same method assuming the heat sink is standard.
It should come off fairly easily, don't force anything.
You need to use a screwdriver to push in the metal arms holding the heatsink in place, then slide them off, or away from the sink.
Just remember, apply pressure - but don't force anything!
The processor has a little arm that flips it out of the socket, this part is easy.
There might be some videos on youtube that exlain better. |

Your best bet is probably to put the processor in the old motherboard, & try removing it from there. That way you can trash anything on the old mobo when trying to pry off the heatsink. It will also protect the CPU contacts. I would use a screwdriver as a lever, or maybe try to put the straight head into a crevice & use a twist action instead of a straight crowbar pry action.
In order to reduce damage risk to the chip, try using a point in the motherboard as your fulcrum when prying the heatsink off. Most heatsink overlap the edges of the processor by quite a bit, so if you have to, stack something onto the motherboard to give you better/closer contact. I'm thinking underneath one of the side edges of the heatsink, & then use the screw driver as leverage. The point is, you're trying to avoid having the screwdriver touch the CPU at any point- your attempting to have it only touch the heatsink & motherboard.
Good luck!
PS - after reading this again, I'm assuming that the heatsink is stuck to the CPU only, and not a case where the entire heatsink can't be removed from the clasps where it attaches down onto the motherboard. If the heatsink is stuck to the motherboard, looking up the install instructions of the mobo may help you reverse engineer it. Different processors & heatsinks attach in different ways. What kind of processor, heatsink, & mobo are you using?

Thanks guys. I heated the heat sink with a hair dryer. The thermal compound became soft and I was able to very gently add some leverage to one corner with a flat head screw-driver.
