Hi guys

I am struggling to fit my synth shots/stabs in my mix as clean as possible. I was wondering how you guys do it. especially reverb settings, and the effect chain. And do you guys use compressor on them? Any delays?

A good example would be any melodic psytrance song coming out of utopia records. If you would like an example listen to the 2 examples I posted here.

First example at 1:33 - 2:26

Second example at 1:19 - 2:37

And btw anyone have a clue how to recreate the house stabs you hear first and being like a melody in it self pretty much.

Well i think the first step is just tweaking finding the good synth sounds.

I've find out that some compression to add Stabiness might work like this parameter.

Attack around 250-500 ms High ratio, 0-20 ms release.

That should make is transient goes crazy.

Then think of verb as how and where u want to put it.

Thats all i know bout those sounds.

Hope it has helped!           My music http://soundcloud.com/disrupted

true, main thing is correctly tweaked synth. filter evelope in particular. then compression. 250 ms of attack might be even too long.
besides compressor transient shapers are helpful for that.
demo anything you can get - sonnox transient shaper, schaak technologies transient shaper, built in cubase envelope shaper if you are on cubase, spl attacker etc

You dont necesseraly need compression to make these "stab" effects, just control the sound with both the AMP and Filter envelopes.

nice short envelopes then you can add short delays and small gated reverbs to them even to make them bigger and/or fit in the mix easier.

You can also try to sidechain the stab to the leads eq.

i use shot n stabs a lot in my tracks.
amp, filter, pitch envelopes is the key and i definitely compress them.

Well its not a necessity, its just a compression method to add stabiness to some sounds.

250 ms is because im not playing with transient its just giving the sounds a short stab than compress a lot so its sounds shorter. Instead of tweaking directly in the synth its adding a secondary enveloppe.           My music http://soundcloud.com/disrupted

I believe is better to tweak directly from synths when possible... trying to fix stuff with compressors is no good idea... only if that extra punch cannot come from source synth.

Ok so here is an example :

Is it that bad to use compression i mean it did help in that case, even tho i tried with synthesis getting that decayed sound it wasnt as nice as that.

Some people see compression as evil but its a powerful tool.           My music http://soundcloud.com/disrupted

One thing I've become rather fond of lately is adding just a liiiitle bit of distortion on stabs/leads to make them cut through the mix nicely. Works really well if your sound lacks a bit of extra sparkle

I can recommend audio damage Kombinat, very good sound on that one.           www.soundcloud.com/vonoom | www.vonoom.bandcamp.com | www.facebook.com/vonoom | www.flikflakfamily.com

Well first you have to emulate to learn, it is a part of human nature.

It's how our brains are structured so we are capible of learning. So I'm sorry for being human

But you are right about finding something new, but before we can do that we need to master the old. At least I do
