well... out of curiosity here, any artists who perform live, in what ways do you do it?
Do you run a backing CD and then do some live synthwork on top?
or do you do a Sub6 and drum on an electronic drum pad while you're brother plays and mixes?
Just interested! |

I am not doing live acts at the moment, but if i do this way is good to do.
Maybe add a second computer, on that u run a sequencer or a vst host like minihost and tweak and play a instrument from time to time

Currently I use ableton live 3 (I will get 4 soon as I can afford to) and I have all my tracks mixed in ableton and I have a channel filled with drum loops and another channel filled with synth loops that I trigger in real time with my midi controller keyboard. I have some effects on a couple of send busses and occasionally route sounds to them too.. I also have a channel that has a few kik+bass loops that I can shift between every once in a while as well. With a little preplanning you can almost compose a full song in real time with ableton... If I owned hardware, I would be playing on that as well... but that's where Live 4 should come into play... I would have one of my favorite synths loaded up and a few custom patches loaded in just for it.
I would bring a cd, just in case something happens to go wrong with my computer.

Here's how we play live. First of all we would like to avoid pauses between tracks and we want it beat mixed. So we have 2 sources, and between them we have a dj mixer connected.
Source 1 is a Fostex Vf16 multitrack harddisk mixer with 16 channels. Every channel contains a 10 minute loop( for example channel 1 contains the kick channel 2 the bassline etc..), this means we can build a track the way we want when playing live. While im playing on the fostex, the other tegmahead jason mixes in some sounds and loops from source nr 2( a laptop which runs Ableton live v4) and eventually he mixes in the next track and the main source is now played from the laptop.
When he is playing with the loops in ableton I hook up a midi keyboard and start to play with some virtual instruments or samplers..
When the track is about to finish we mix back the Fostex again and so it goes..
Well this is basically a brief description of how our live looks like for the moment... it can be different sometimes

tegma!
dosnt your lap top ever crash, or does
some harsh sounding stals whyle playing
live? especialy whyle your activating a
vst via a keyboard in your laptop?
i was recording a band at sae, in there
studio, each time i took a laptop for
atmespheric sounds or rithm parts, it worked
good until i started touching it my self,
then it started to jump abit and click!
how do you avoid that? |

Well no not yet
We have a low latency card u see, Echo Indigo..
And when i play on the fostex ,jason closes down the project and opens a new so its not the same open all the time , maybe that reduces the problems. And we dont use that much sounds from vsts we try to keep it to 2 instruments maximum, remember u must also have a powerful laptop for live performance,..

nice topic, here´s my contribution:
- when I played Trance some years ago, I used only hardware, a Groovebox MC-307 sending MIDI to a range of other hardwares i.e. a TB-303, a Korg MS2000r, a TR-707, samplers, fx and other stuff, all conected and playing at the same time, sometimes comanded by the groovebox, or only getting the tempo from it; it was realy cool.
- playing psytrance I used to do some backup cd playing stuff and synthesize some other stuff over it. But now I do prefer to play on acid or directly on logic the entire track, for the silence between track changes I do some synth noises and it works well.
keep it up.
cheers.

You can assign either a midi key or keyboard key to damn near anything in Ableton. You have to click Ctrl + M to get into the midi map function. Then all you do is select the drum loop that is already loaded into the track with the mouse and then press a key on your midi keyboard.
To get your midi trigger to stop the loop as well as start it, you need to select the toggle function in the launch mode. I will be at the bottom area once you have double clicked on the loop you want to change. It is set to trigger by default.
Two more tips for you as well...
Change the global quantization to 1/32 beat, and turn on the legato. The global quantization will keep your drum loops that you trigger from sounding too far off beat, and the legato mode will allow you to switch between drum loops and the loop will not retrigger itself every time you trigger it. Works really good when you are using drum loops that are longer than 4 beats. Make sure you read the manual...

I make some dubby stuff and kinda noise with mates at a cafe every 2 weeks on friday nights for chill out... I run fruityloops via desktop at the dj stall with all the stuff 100% pre programmed and just tweak it as I go, fruityoops is an amazing program if you really dive into it... I also have a mate who after about 1.5 hours of my PC stuff plays his fav dub/chill on vinyl (he bought a vinyl cutter so he could record his fav chill cd's onto vinyl the nutter!) and I have a mates Novation KS4 and his TB303 which had modified to a Devilfish http://www.vintagesynth.org/roland/303df.shtml ... I just play around in the background adding in twaked souds over the dub... I don't impose my sounds really on the orginal tracks, just add litttle bits to keep the interst in the msusic. Haven't don either for a while, to busy at uni right now... but am hoping to spend some of this summer when I'm living for 3 months in Malaysia working on some local ethnic music and also my brand of hard acidy industrail dubby stuff I have some very good muslim frined sover tere who are big into their music and I want to use their musical skills to break the image on the muslim culture portrayed by todays western media (I'm a Catholic by religion hehe... |
