I have one sample folder where I put most of the stuff I use, but I make sure to name the samples appropriately (in a way that makes sense to me), then I also have 3-4 commercial sample libraries as well, and I just keep them in their separate folders inside my main sample folder.
I also make sure to only keep samples that I think I'll be likely to use. I've previously fallen into the trap of having enormous amounts of samples, but the only thing that achieved was to make it impossible for me to find anything, regardless of what structure I tried to use.
Imo, just as with VST's, it's quite easy to get too much samples, and then realise that you have tons of stuff that you never ever use. For instance, in reality I only use like 5-6 different kicks, 4-5 different snares and so on, so if you choose your samples well, you can get rid of a lot of "baggage".
In the end, I find it easier to keep a pretty small library of samples, and if I realise I need a special kind of sampled sound, I often sample it myself. That's ofc not always possible, but you can actually get pretty far with just a decent mic and some imagination =) |
