How do YOU organize your sample library?

Over the years I've collected many many samples. Now I find myself with a labrynth of folders to navigate through. I keep many together as they are "kits" so it keeps me from having a simple kick, drum, clap, snare, hats, other percussions, bass, synth setup. I start out with two sections loops and one shots and go from there. I try to keep each respective library in its own folders however when navigating for sounds it becomes very tedious. I noticed the cubase 5 has tagging information that is very helpful however it'd take ages to tag them all. Perhaps I should hire a high school kid to do it for 8 bucks an hour.           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

organize?!? oh, shit - !

no, seriously, anyone with brilliant ideas please post to this thread.

if it's better than:
a folder,
with stuff in it,
somewhere.

....then i'm an instant convert.

though that high school kid idea also sounds really appealing.

You create a naming convention, like

scream_cold_death

or

screech_metal_grind_car_crash

to basically give you an idea what kind of sound it is, then you pack them together into different folders, like 1 folder for screams, or another folder for drones, or what have you. Happy renaming

Jeese for us who have over 500g that is much too time consuming, I just place samples relevant to the manufacturer.            E-KLIPSE Trance Productions

agree with E-KL!PSE:

Perhaps you arent aware of what a terrabyte or so of .wavs can look like.           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

Ease up, I wasn't trying to brag, it's not a compitition. It just feels much too time consuming. To be honest I only use a few sample libraries, vengeance, newborn & logics default samples. I know of manual renamers but you still need to go through every thing. I use to be really OCD about it but now I'm more OCD on my arrangments. Renaming your sample has a pitfall though, collabs are more time consuming and data consuming as the other party will not know of the samples. That's another reason to try to use your DAW of choice's preset sample library. Maj of the time I use mainly classic Roland drumkit samples in the logic/garage band sample library. All the sample libraries are just a derivative of those classic units.

if and when i've used a sample.. but change the folder name or move the file.. the projectfile gets confused and can't find it any more.. error.

If you load it in again.. it doens't remember all the parameters nor the grain or stretch data...

so i'm planning a folder structure with good namings for when the newest version of my preferred daw will release.

drums in drums, one shots in one shots...

not some hi-hats in a folder named 'space instru' and some atmospheres in a folder named 'hi-hats'

cause i will eventually want to change the name

Most sample libraries are organized already. I don't think it's a good idea to extract, for example, all SNARES out of all libraries and put them in SNARES folder.

I just put all sample libraries in "SAMPLES" folder, without changing structure.

Also, I have two additional folders, one for all kind of speech samples, and the second for all kind of samples i made myself.

I started naming every sample as I was chopping it up. Simply gave it a name that makes sense to me, i.e. rev jet fly by, or cave tick long, cluedo hit mid...etc. The root forlder is the name of the sample CD, i.e. DIST 1 (Distorted Reality1) and inside were folders i.e. atmos (amospheres), pads, high hits, mid hits, low hits, explosions, whooshes, drones, distorted drones, drum loops, one shot drum hits...etc.
I started working that way from 2000 so its all labeled up. Its one of things I very happy with doing from the get go.

Then I backed up them chooped up, organized sample libraries on a CD case AND on a HDD that is in a drawer outside my computer. Just to make sure all those years of chopping up and labeling, don't go to waste.

My recipe has been to delete 90% of the samples.

Like many novices gearing up in the beginning I collected shitloads of samples, paying less attention to quality etc. In the end they were just collecting dust (so to speak) AND made it really difficult to find the good stuff. Took a couple of days and just browsed through everything last year - only keeping the samples that I (now with some experience) thought I'd be likely to use.

I've bought some professional sample CD's and they tend to be ok organized so I don't bother moving anything around.

Kicks

Snares

Hats

Then over time I delete the ones that sound shit.

I have all my files in a couple of folders like loops, samples, voice, etc. and then subdivisions as I thought were good over the years.
Now of course my library has grown and the amount of files/folders has increased a lot, but here comes another trick:
I most always collect all the samples to the project folder (great little function in ableton) so everything that a track uses (except vst .dll's) is in that tracks folder.

So if I want to recall a sound I know is in another track, I just need to browse that track. If I'm looking for something else than I go into my repository of endless sound files.

This way will double a lot of common used samples (but then again, for me those are almost only percussion), but that's ok with me
