thought i would start a thread of interesting ways people have made their buildup woosh's.
i have used interesting snares/hihats/crash samples - added a long reverb, reversed it, and sometimes used a bit of pitch bending during the samples buildup. getting bored of these quickly though.
absolum seems to have gotten these perfectly, considering the amount he uses in every track of his.
how do you make yours ? |

I use to make these whoosh effects in hardware (Supernova II, Waldorf XT and MKS-80), using noise filtered and extensive modulation with LFOs. Sometimes, I use the ring modulation (between square and saw)together with noise in the Supernova II, plus a lot of reverb. I set a LFO with slow speed in order to modulate the noise level while a second fast LFO + BIG delay Fade In in order to shake only the final sound (modulating the filter cutoff and the saw's pitch). Using the PC, I finalize these samples (generally, creating env generator). It sounds a different whoosh for me. |

well its because u are not a person that hear lot of music ... i can explain to u .. since u are not a person that hear to much music .... u can make a wind sample .. with noise oscilator ... for ex in nord lead .... put the osilator with the semitones in the maximum .. and put the wave form as NOISE ... then .. u put both lfo's .. down ... and take a high freq with the cutoff ... and u will hear i kind of wind ...(when i say wind .. its not the wind u hear and the window DUHHHH .... but quiet like digita wind ............
and u can make a swoosh with outher sample ... even ... with a car ...or vocal sample .... its only a mather of knowing HOW TO DO IT .. something i think u need to learn ~;)
before posting such a ignorant post .. u could try to first understand my words .. then .. try to by a normal person ^:^) maybe it will help u in your future life

the eaay way to do this effect it's:
on the most of the vst's you got an FM\Noise
get the knob to the highest level of it ant then pitch it from the lowest level to the top one.
after you did it put some eq & filter\compressor on it and you will get this effect.
hope i was helpfull.
all the best.

I usually use envelopes to control the noise, ampitude-wise and frequency-wise. Then i use all kinds of effects to make the swoosh different, like a bitchcrusher for intstance. I then export the swooshes as audio and maximize them in an audio editor. Then i put them in my special swooshy-directory.
Darkpsy: i think you should really give Zildoggo some more hints and tips about the use of synths. If you read his posts you get the impression that he has no idea. By the way, are you a friend of Stimpy's ? |

I use waldorf attack for it, and change the filter. Not the pitch.
Attack time for the filter envelope is 60/bpm so it stays right on time.

" well its because u are not a person that hear lot of music ... "
are you talking to me?.,
lol. i know most types synthesis in existance., so that's not the problem.,
i have made wind sounds with 16 noise sources each with a dedicated filter + modulation , amp and panning.,
realy sounds like antartica
i was just joking because there are no samples of REAL wind (recording wind with a microphone).,
if they exist they are realy hard to find .,.,
best wooshes i've made are with reverse reverb., put a mono source through a stereo reverb, record and reverse.,
this way the woosh will seem to come from a wide stereo field and concentrates into the mono sound.,
cool effect .,

Wind or not wind is the question
Nice tips so far, ive never used reverse reverb, only reversed delays, what is also a nice effect
I also use mostly envelopes for amp and pitch to let it raise, and some effects delay, reverb, panning filters flanger phaser this and that. Here a bit there a bit
A good raising effect is also automating delays feedback time. You can do this very good with the OhmBoyz plugin.
For example take a reversed kick, the OhmBoyz and a lot of feedback. Start with a mid-long feedback time and automate it downwards, so the rev. kick gets faster and faster.

hmm.,., i doubt those are real samples.,
very propable they are synthesized (no matter how good they sound, wind is easily emulated,.)
the problem is with microphones.,
when the wind is so strong that you can hear it then you will get problems recording it correctly .,
try blowing into a microphone and you'll see what i mean.,
you can fix it a little with screens and stuff but this also influences the recording.,
so the best chance is to have a big wind in front of you but to put the mic in a windless part.,.,
anyway i'll look for it, thanks for the tip
greets.,

take a sound (like maybe a vocal sample)
route a send (prefader) to a reverb
choose a suitable reverb (not too long)
bounce ONLY the reverb to disk
import the bounced reverb to a free track
reverse the bounced reverb audio file
line it up so that it finishes on the start of a bar (chop the end to get a clean cut)
hey, presto! Whoosh!
love & light
