A boom or a explosion?
a Boom can be made by
timestretching a kickdrum of your liking.....
also, if you have a audio editor, like wavelab, adobe audition , ect ect, generate a sinewave at 30 or 40 or 50 or 60hz well the freq closest to your root maybe is good...
dont forget to fade in and out... if you want the boom to go up or down, use pitch bend...
but the classic reverbed kick is not a boom for me... its a explosion,
very simple also...
import the kick to adobe audition for example,
make sure you generate 5-8sec of silence, take the full reverb and use long length, like 4000 - 5000 ms.. and room size about 15000-16000m3
experiment... the preset "great hall" is a nice starting point just make the lenght and room size adjustments....
a nice little fade out at the end, there you have a nice explosion...

to add to that, you could also take that booooom you made and throw it in a wave editor. Reverse the sample, make sure you have some space at the end of the sample for some reverb. Add reverb while it's reversed, then turn the sample back forward. This gives you the classic pre-verb before the booom.
Doing this you could place the sample so the boom hits right as you go into a break, or right before the kick bass come in after the intro.
The nice thing about this is that it kills 2 birds with one stone. You get a build and a boooooom!
For a crash, just use a crash cymbal sample and you can do the above method on it as well. Or you can time stretch it a bit to get a nice long held out crash. Or both of course. You could even have a slowly moving High pass filter on it to give it some movement. Or some flanging or phasing. |

oh and one more idea. Once you have this pre-verb boom set up. While the pre-verb part is coming up, just before the boom you could cut out a couple beats of the pre-verb just before the boom and bring it back in right on this boom.
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHH........BOOOOOOMMMMmmm! |
