hey dudes
today at work there came up a question in my mind which I now want to have answered
When you are booked for a party, do you make a difference by the time the tracks you choose to play? If you are booked on the maintime of a party or on the beginning / the end?
So do you prefer to play more new tracks on the maintime then on the start/end?
and do you play for the start / the landing more wellknown tracks? (I mean sound from 2004 till now)
Or does it make no difference for you?
If I play on the maintime I play more really new tracks to entertain the audience more ....
when I play on my fav. time (morning) I like it to play more wellknown tracks ("my" gems which are often wellknown from the audience but in my eyes unbeatable) to bring them back to something familiar after a beatiful strange night ^^

I use to play whatever feels good for the moment as long as it fits the set, and the mood of the dancefloor

+1
plus: if it is a party where I know not many people are wellknown with the music I play I just play the best stuff. If there is lots of people that know the music already I try newer stuff. And.. I usually don't play artists that are also playing on the party.

Year track was made makes no difference as to when I play it. I feel like its up to the promoter to book you in a time slot that best fits your style. Play what you like and what you want to hear, if it is obvious you love your music they will love your music.

it doesent really matter if your playing old tunes as long as your doing the job and the crowd is enjoyin it
you should play what ever you like regardless of the time your playin at (ofcourse style may vary according to the time ie mornin/full on/twilight/night)
i usually prepare my sets based on how long i have to play.... if i play for a long period i gradually build up my set.... but if i have to play short it jus starts with a bang....
dont care abt wad ppl have to say if your playin old music.... i realised one thing being in this scene for a time now that every tom dick and harry in this scene thinks he noes better than others.... and usually when you play old music ppl say ahh i have this track.... but doesent matter if it does the trick... my sets have a lot of old tunes usually and it has always worked for me... |

So the time does matter
Of course it also depends on the party. But if you are to start the party, imho it really doesnt make any sense to start with 155 dark experimental stuff...
Besides I don't think you are doing a very good job if you don't think about the musical journey the crowd has had before you start to play. You might just totally screw up that journey if you just play what you want. Thinking beyond your own set could serve you well.

Heh, it's a classic saying for djing. It basically means that you're not a single entity, you should act as a part of the flow of the party.
I think that applies especially to psytrance parties that follow a usual flow of night/day cycle. When the sun is up and everyone is mellow in the morning, don't blast something ridiculous, play to the mood and the time and you'll get the best response (or if you want to blast some tracks, build up to and out of them).

i always go by the crowd. it' doesn't matter if i got opening, prime-hour or closing set - just keep my eyes on the people and hands on decks...
oh and: i don't limit my music selection for the gig. being able to improvise, and change the mood of the dancefloor when it calls for it - is what i do.

I once played a full power goa trance set, just before some other guy playing Zenon style music. I ruined his set. Sorry.
