How do you create sounds?

I have do admit, whenever I sit down and think 'now let's make some spacey pads, which have never been made before', really nothing but nothing pops in my head.

This I mean, with just working with 1 synth and no crazy fx or such.

Now I just wonder how other people do it?

I just can't imagine to imagine a certain sound in my head, and then getting it done with a synthesizer.
I would just pick a preset, play around with it, and apply loads of external fx on it (till my cpu runs out of power), and see what happens.

Actually I'm finding it not inspiring at all, and soon I get bored of it.

So what do you do in order to get those things done?

You could try combining 2 or more pads and layer them. eq each of them so that all are audible. Then play around with their volumes and let each one of them stand out on different points in the mix.

Also I always try to not apply too many external plugins, cpu problem and not always desired results, and often overprocessed.           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

I think the most creative way for me is to reset all settings til i just hear the raw oscillator. And then start to process with filter envelope etc til i hear something cool..and then i modulate in different creative ways..then maybe i create a little melody in my sequencer. Maybe then I loop the melody and make the adjustments on the synthesizer at the same time..But its probably very important to find a synth you like too work with and get to know all the functions really well..i really dont like presets they kill my creativeness...

There's one synth I'm very comfortable working with, unfortunately I don't really like it that much, it's Albino:-)

I really should be looking out for a new one, but the thought of having to learn it really thru and thru holds me back.

The more you practice in creating sounds, the more easier it becomes to transport ideas from your head to the sequencer. And the more particular the ideas become. Just tweak a lot, read manuals and try not to use presets.           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

@DJONES
Have you read the Virus Tutorial? That might help you to get a idea how to start sounds and you can use the gained knowledge on albino as well. On albino its even easier to get some things done, for example a log. or exp. envelope.

Well another problem is, I just don't have sounds in my head, which I haven't ever heard before.
In my head I could make like combinations of sounds, but to come up with something entirely new is beyond me.

And I really wonder if it's actually possible to have sounds in your head which don't exist yet.

Because (I think) my brain could only think of sounds which I have heard before.

I use presets and samples mainly as an inspirational tool.... I hear something i want more of, and I start producing sounds with in that direction...

even the smalles sound can eventually become a whole track, if its good enough           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

+1

i needed a long time to discover presets. you still have to know the synth when modifying. in the end it will sound completly different anywayz. but a good starting point sometimes...

+1 !!

I love to begin with raw oscilator sound. Choose a apropiate octave and begin tweaking envelopes, then filters and modulations.

Raw oscillator sound always inspires me specially in synths like have nice deep sound like z3ta.

What i try to keep in mind is to "be in love" with the sound from the beginning. I try to think "oh my god that saw sounds delightful" and i try to bring out the best of it depending if i wanna create a pad or a lead or whatever. Just keep loving it, because if it dissapoint you in any part of the road, you better go back and reconsider that tweaking, only go after sounds that make you feel all chilly and exited.

And always think: what do i have to do to make this sound more like i've conceived it in my mind?
It could be reverb, delay, chorus, flanger... maybe envolvent settings or distortion. Maybe layering it with another synth or adding a different octave osc.

Know your tools, then you'll know what you have to do to bring that thoughts into sound. cheers.

yeah, it is so much more fun to start from scratch without a preset.           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

the more you understand your synth and sound synthesis, the more you'll be able to do what you want.
analyzing presets is a good way to learn sound tricks.
if you don't have any idea, just explore what is possible.
try to be aware to accidents and mistakes, they are also a good inspiration source.

the world is a huge sound reserve...

It's the time spent that has to be forgotten. When I come up with a sound I really really like, it's almost everytime after hours and hours of not looking at your clock anymore, not thinking about creating a unique sound but just doing it. Sounds all naive hippie & idealistic but for me that's when it happens. Deeper and deeper without getting bored. But without external effects? nah... try camelspace in combination with motion 2.8!           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

i couldn't have said it better... I guess i have a hippie state of mind aswell
just get lost in the music don't think too much ( i gotta make a cool sound)
have fun, tweak that shit, radomize it
fuck it all up have fun and the sounds will come, let it be natural we sometimes put the lid on creativity. there is such things as trying to hard ur closing ur lid cause your forcing the process instead of flowing sounds like some krazy feng shui lol
