I ve been working on some tracks on Cubase SX3 and I was wondering which would be everyone s method when it comes to record kicks, snares, hats, crash, etc...
a)If you work with audio samples (wav)you will have great sounds but it to be harder to edit than midi files...
b)if you use midi files and it s sounds you might loose a little quality on general sound quality but it s so much easier to edit.
c) Maybe you can unite both of the above options best features and discard the worse ones, by recording midi files with a sampler such as Intakt..then you have great sound quality and it s still very easy to edit.
Please tell me how do you prefer to work, and tell me your basic workflow regarding to drum recording on trance tracks. If you use sampler, please tell me which and why did you choose it...
I d like to know what do you use, how you manage it and why do you prefer like this..
Thanks... |

this is the 1 billionth time , this question is being asked for .. it would be better , if u would search , rather than waitng for some 1 to write ..
anyways , just use whatever u like and what sounds good to ur ears ... cubase engine is massive , so dont worry abt it ! |

i usually trigger all the samples from battery (a sampler)
But if i want to edit lenghts, play with fades, reverse, play with scissors then i put the samples on a audio track, and samples wich i want to use as they are will just be put directly in battery.

i use audio samples that i trigger via midi... i don't see why it would be audio or midi... You need midi to trigger the audio... Do you mean synthesized drums versus sampled drums? Well, i use sampled drums, i don't like the sound of synthesized drums... only kick is sometimes synthesized (in genres like this one the kick is ALWAYS synthesized, but in genres like techno i use sampled kicks from leather cussions for example). I think it's much more versatile, because after all these years of sampling and downloading loops i have a big number of very good sampled drumkits and loops to cut/timestretch/pitchshift/reverse/filter. But that's because i learned electronic music from a hiphop beat creator... And i still use the hiphop/DnB way of making drums... |

he means audio as importing Audio Files onto the Arrange instead of using a sampler.
I don't see how this can hurt audio quality, unless the sampler you are using is hurting that quality. Basicly I hardly care if a drum sample falls exactly on the bar or it has a delay +/- to each direction.

ow... Well, i hybridise, just like alex... Some things are easier when you simply import it in an audio track, and some things a simpler in a sampler... If you need 1 snarehit with loads of reverb, just put a reverb on the sampler , record 1 snare hit, turn off the reverb, and import the reverbed snare in an audio track... Ofcourse, if you then start changing all the processing in the sampler you will have to rerecord it otherwise it will sound strange, but that's a damn sight easier then automating a reverb or opening a new sampler just for one snare hit... |

i use audio to 80% on drums. if i use midi it will be bounced realy soon anyway. i have found out that the best sampler is cubase sx itself!
my friends wonder about my method but today i am realy fast with handling drums in audio-tracks. it makes the mixing even more easy to handle.
just sold my drumcomputer, hurted a bit in my soul - but it just stands there for the dust since many monthes. |

Yes people..what I meant is: if you simply open an audio track instead of a midi track, obviously it ll be a little more complicated to edit drums (let s say you wanna cerate some complex fills with kicks and snare rolls). Of couse you can do it (I ve been doing like this) but some quantitize operations would not be possible.
If you use a drum synth with it s own banks like Batery or Stylus RMX you ll be able to edit it all quite more simple, but wav samples would have been preatty much more apropriated when comes to sound quality and psy trance sounds.
I ve been using a sampler (I think with baterry or stylus you can do it too) like Intakt. So I record the midi clip into a midi track and then I choose the sample that suits my needs. Soon I ll need to bounce this midi track into audio track in order to save CPU. By the way...how do I export a single midi clip from a midi track into an audio file in my HD?? Let s say I have a 8 minutes kick track (midi) and I want to export only a 16 bars part. How do I export only this 16 notes midi clip??? Whici export option should I choose from the files/export menu?? |

there is a button called "between locators". dude, this is the most important function, you always export the whole track?
anyhow making drumrolls and velocity games is pretty easy in audiotracks, just look at the shortcuts menu.

I use midi for simple drumsounds eg chh ohh claps and snare and always audio to build more bizzare percussion loops which is actually the juice of the track ... so yeah. .. mostly audio

i didnt see any shortcut for velocity or something to make drumrolls easier. |

Amd what about the drum editor??? Does anyone here use it? It s preatty good to work with and perform quick and easy editing, but all drum instruments would be routed to the same midi track, so it wouldn t be possible to apply individual plug ins to each one of the drums intruments. So I confess I have never used it. |

I don't use it... Never got my head round it to be totally honest... For some reason i find it more easy to use the piano roll, and then use the keygroups of the sampler to assign them to the right note... |

if you use battery or any other good drum sampler you can use the drum editor and every
drum sample will routed to a different midi tracks |
