Lol... this thread made me laugh... you got nordlead and u can't make it squeal, maybe you don't deserve to have it. J/K

- Read the whole manual
- Learn to set up UNISON
- Learn FM synthesis
- Learn multipatch timbres
- Learn SYNC modulation
- Learn PWM
- Learn the morph thing

- Use different octave layers
- Use external distortion, fuzz work wonders for harsh timbres
- Use external fx (chorus, phaser, delay, reverb, etc)

Nord is a swiss knife.
I usually layer it so i achieve fatter sounds, but the nord is no bass synth, is meant to be clear and sharp, it can render good basses but its power is on the mids, the modulations, the fm and unison, this is a lead guy it doesn't sound as a virus either.

First thing I did when I got my nord was program my most used psy sounds... if you can't do this it won't ever sound good to you nor will any other synth but the ones with psytrance presets (aka renegade lol).

So the first reply is not a joke but the truth. Go do ur homework and get those sounds used in the psytrance scene by yourself.

Its funny because for a long time I also thought that the psysounds came from the nordlead or a specific synth. Then I understood most of them are simple and very common synthesis "exercises".

Cause it sounds very different and although the Virus has like 5 FM modes, the FM on the Nord Lead is like a cold lazer beam that cuts through the mix like a light saber.

And the phaser on the TI is average sounding, at best. When I wanted to make a patch with a phaser, I never used the phaser on the TI, but used Phasemistress instead. It sounded a lot better, to me ears at least.

The thing with the Virus a/b/c/classic VS the Lead 1/2, is that the Virus basically runs circles around the Lead in terms of sound design as far as a wide spectrum of sounds is concerned.
Having said that though, the raw Nord Lead sound is better than the Raw Access Virus sound, the FM and filters (especially the high pass filter), pisses over the Virus filter... Even when I was using the Virus TI for maoin leads I almost always used some 3rd party filter plug ins, especially for band/high pass filter patches.
All that is according to my tastes, off course.

Peace out.

yes agree but don't really like much the nords filters .. talking nord 1 and 2 these synth really cut and sit well.
virus we used it more for commercial sounds , cheese ,while the nord we used it more for the opposite , more evil sound ,the caractere of these synth is very different and complete each other.

nord are some of the best synth to program , you tweak sound in no time once you know them ,i would really like to have one back

A good point for starting is to recreate the sound example in the "Mother of Leads" thread:
http://forum.isratrance.com/the-mother-of-all-leads-thread/
By doing this you learn much of the typically psytrance sounds and the possibility of your Nord and the basic of psy style sound construction...
Hope it helps? Have fun!

Hey guys, one question, i want to buy a nord lead soon, but i dont know if i should go for the nord lead 2 or nord lead 2x, i want to have that crispy metalic sound, not the cheesy one, do you think there is a diffrence in the sound of this 2?           VA - Spiritual Science out now!

I have to admit that I've owned at least 4/5 Nord Leads which I all sold within a few months.
Every single time I had one, I got bored with it really fast, and I just didn't have enough fun with it.
But since I have my last Nord Rack 2, 2.5 years ago I never looked back.
I'm liking this synth more every day.
Just jamming the keyboard with a nice electric-piano kinda patch playing bluesy style music is just hours of continues fun for me.
It's just got a very nice sort of "direct" feel upon pressing the keys that inspires me much more than playing with Virus.

what i was trying to say was.. why the fuk ya bothering,, shouldnt one fat synth be enuff for one person! and about the phazor,, naa man u can make it sound big trust me.. depend on how ya mod matrix is set up and ya plugin chain after, so dont be to ignorant to what im saying nector ... lets face it phasemistress aint that good,, quite digitally harsh actually
besides it was around 4years ago i had my TI, so at the time i thought the phazor was nuts!

by the way nector,, love that metaphor of like a cold lazor beam cutting through the mix like a light saber.. hehe very nice..

That's very outsider's way of looking at it. Every synth, phat or thin, has its sound and a mix benefits from a varied arsenal of sound sources.
If this was the case, I would only make music using Logic's ES2 which is phat and does everything, from sequenced, vector moving pads, to made FM, to a good sawooth trance bassline...

I am simply comparing a phaser to a phaser, to the amount and what kind of plug ins you can put after it to make it sound big.

If you listen to a real analog phaser, you will be bored to tears with the phaser on the TI, and most probably with the phasemistress. It is the editability and syncing options that only make them attractive to me. But I still have the TI and I still think phasemistress pisses over it, in terms of sound and editability.
...tastes and all that

Peace out.

i kno what ya saying.. it was probly at the time i thought it was good because i was in love with the TI,, so it was probly me that became the ignorant,,, towards other sounding quality.. owell i havnt got it now anyways....
in terms of editbilty i cannot argue with that, why sountoys are great because of the endless editing

dont kno if anyone can remember Masters Of The Keys album years ago,, had a TI preset on there in the intro , first track, using that phazor on a certain waveform and pitch assind to mod n filter , made sound like u where inside it

as for your nord lead problem,, ya should of downloaded Disco DSP!!!! and saved ya money!

It's just one the areas where I'm liking it better than the Virus.
Imho Nord is just perfect for all your guirky Psychedelic sounds and filter sweeps.
Whereas the Virus is of course much better suited to make deep moving pad-sounds and many other complex sounds with.
