hey guys,
when im makin a track and have it say at -27 db on my monitors..let say it sounds very good quality wise....but then as i turn up the volume, the quality changes my kick sounds crappy, my synths lack presence, etc...
why does that happen???
basically, what im asking is, how do you make the quality of a track sound loud (with limiters and compression) and at the same time be consistent no matter how loud its played....say, at an outdoor rave for example...
thanks guys           saii.rave.ca

maybe when you turn it up, your room acoustics are making it sound different.

for basic knowlage.
the volume that musician need to work with in order to hear the they work in the best way that they can is 80-85db

and i'm not talking 85db on the cubase output

when u hear lower then this, u actually loosing frequencies, u just not hearing them !

so my opinion, since u've made the track so low, u didnt hear those freq's and now when u lift the vol higher, u get some masking or what ever that rubish your quality.

Where do you turn up the volume ? If it's the master fader it could be due to clipping. It could also be that your amp/speakers compress at higher volume levels. Or you could be hearing an already bad mix louder

Hardware db metering with little mic inside..you can get some good and cheap ones from behringer..but believe me..83db is actualy quite loud for home usage..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

The only way.. microphone and db meter!

Or years of practice holding a piece of paper up and feeling for the vibrations.

but it`s true what crying orc said.. even to mix constant on that level for a specific time and making breaks is quite important to refresh your ears..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

my neighbour told me, that he is musician himself and understands that i need to "practise" ...
but my beats bring him out of sync when he practise (120<->145) ... hehe

only told him: "if it's too fast, then you're too old ..."

go to radioshack like stores, its a plastic thing on batteries with a meter that measures the sound pressure level. its got nothing to do with your computer. you can measure how loud you girlfriend screams at you f.e.
